Reinforcements: Phils add Brown, DeFratus, Kratz, Moss and Savery
You've probably heard by now, but following Lehigh Valley's elimination from the International League finals last night, the Phillies added pitchers Justin DeFratus and Joe Savery, catcher Erik Kratz and outfielders Domonic Brown and Brandon Moss to their active roster. All but Kratz have at least some chance to appear in the postseason, given uncertainty on the bench and bullpen, so it should be interesting to see if and how Charlie Manuel uses them over the remaining 13 games.

I guess I’m OK with adding Savery. If I’m not mistaken, they would have had to put him on the 40 man in March anyway. So no additional options will be burned if he doesn’t make the team out of ST 2012. This does increase his and De Fratus’ service time a little, otoh.
I’m not crying about cutting Zagurski since it was obvious that they were never going to give him another shot anyway. Plus it really was doubtful that he’d ever turn into anything. But it was still dumb for them not to give him a fair chance, and I don’t see what rationale they could have had for not doing that. Sometimes your scouts are wrong. Some guys don’t look like they ought to succeed in the majors but do anyway. Why wouldn’t you want to find out for sure?
I don’t care about Juan Perez though.
I am actually excited about them adding Savery. The addition of his service time kind of sucks but considering how many “meaningless” games they will have over the next several weeks, it might be nice to see what he can do against major league hitters, same with De Fratus.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
What I find really interesting is that they DFA’d those guys now to make room for Savery and Moss. That tells me that this isn’t just reinforcements for the stretch. Both those guys are gonna get to audition for a post season spot.
Moss has a legitimate shot to prove hes a better LHB off the bench than Gload, or Bowker, or Brown.
And if you believe the road to the WS goes through Milwaukee or Atlanta, and that after the four starters, Worley is your swing man, and you have Lidge Bastardo, Stutes, and Madson, a a situational lefty is a lot more valuable than any of the other relievers filling the pen. Thats why Savery is up.
I’m going on record with this. Joe Savery is going to face some combination of Heyward, McCann, Freeman or Bourn last series and make or not make the postseason roster based on that series.
it would be a hell of a story. going from transitioning to a hitter at A+ ball less than a year ago, to facing Prince Fielder in a high leverage relief spot in the postseason….

I’m genuinely excited about all three. Savery’s a good story and at least deserves this cuppa coffee with an outside shot at more. Brown can get a walk and pinch-run for Howard or Ibanez. Moss can actually get a goddamned pinch hit that can go for extra bases.

What sucks is that unless they dl someone, only one of them can make the PS roster.

and, had Brown done what Moss did at the plate at LHV since he was sent down, this wouldn’t even be an issue.

If I’m not mistaken, all they have to do to make Moss or Savery eligible is transfer someone to the 60 day DL. And it doesn’t have to be someone on active roster. It can be anyone on 40 man.

I’d love to have a situational lefty in the postseason. I think it might be risky to basically make someone make his major league debut that way. I think I’m kind of rooting against that happening, for Savery’s sake.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Moss as a PH. Although he and Bowker are basically the same guy, hitting-wise. Their offensive stats at every level are remarkably similar.
I guess with Zagurski they figured they had better leftys and no one else was interested. I don’t think it means he sucks, it just means that other teams want to pick him up on the cheap.
