The Unwatchables: Phillies at Mets Game Thread, September 25, 2011

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets, Sep 25, 2011 2:10 PM EDT

Hello? Is this thing on?

I have no illusions that this will be a highly watched game in light of pretty much everything... crappy play, meaninglessness of the proceedings, and a certain football team's big divisional game at the same time.

Use this thread to discuss anything you want.

Roy Halladay is going for his 19th victory, to get to the point. And the Phillies have historically clobbered Mike Pelfrey BIG BIG BIG PELF.

See ya around.

so for those of you who were unaware, the 9 starters came into this game with the folling triple slash career line against Pelfrey in 261 AB’s:

307/411/479

10 HR 2 3B 10 2B, and if it wasn’t for Ibanez 1 BB to 9K’s against Pelf, they qwould have more BB than K’s collectively.

Let’s just say that I’m glad that my headrest on my bed is soft cause I keep hitting my head against it. It’s just been bad… lack of pitching, lack of hitting and just ugly baseball. Salty couldn’t catch Wake’s knuckler at the beginning of the game, so that led to 2 runs on passed balls, Posada homered and it’s just been bad. Basically, bad luck but also just getting hurt by walks and bad bounces.

by JLS89 on Sep 25, 2011 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait, Saltamacchia catching Wakefield?

by Shazbot on Sep 25, 2011 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm. I’m trying to remember where I saw it, but Salty really got hammered on some new measures of catcher defence. Might be another point for it, unless he’s just been catching Wake all year, in which case the data’s tainted.

by Shazbot on Sep 25, 2011 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I feel like he’s been catching Wake a lot this year but I went to a few games that Wake started and Varitek started. I haven’t seen these numbers, so I’m just going based off of the top of my head. I’ll try and find these numbers.

by JLS89 on Sep 25, 2011 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t care that much.

by Shazbot on Sep 25, 2011 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Out of Wakefield’s 22 starts, Salt’s started 21 of them.

Bob.

by The Dark on Sep 25, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

No problem. I didn’t look at Wake’s relief appearances, because you generally don’t switch out the catcher for a relief pitcher.

I think the tipping pitches thing was BS. I think they told him that to make Bastardo feel like there was a reason… It’s all mental. Bastardo’s missing his spots. He’s just not performing.

Chance are it is and mind you I don’t give Dubee the benefit of he doubt but we just don’t know what Bastardo’s limits are. Fatigue is tricky and seriously complex, there’s not much in the way of statistically significant data to be sure which is why I go with tolerances established by a few years of data. There’s no way he could have maintained his earlier numbers fatigue or no fatigue. This could be a fast and hard regression to the mean as much as it is fatigue.

Wow.

Both wild card races will be down to 1 game at best going into the last series of the season. Boston is tied with Tampa and 1 up on LAA with a loss, and 1 and 2 up respectively with a win tonight.

Atlanta plays at Philly
St.Louis is at Houston
Boston travels to Baltimore
Tampa gets the Yanks at home
LAA go to Texas.

If the Red sox blow this, playing the 3rd worst team in the AL, when the Angels and Rays play the 2 best, they should be hung in effigy.

If Atlanta should somehow pull it out, they should be given credit where credit is due.

I’m calling Tampa/Texas NYY/Detroit and St.Louis/Philly Milwaukee/Arizona.

So says Catstradamus.

Well shit, if we’re not going to let pitchers hit, I say let’s DH for the catcher, too. That position is incredibly notorious for being primarily defensive. Save a few noteworthy players (Gehrig, Berra, Bench, Piazza), how often do you get a catcher with serious offensive capabilities? And it’s an incredibly tiring and dangerous position to play. Catchers do not run well, no surprises there considering how worn out their knees are. And as harmful as it is to throw a baseball at 95 mph, it’s not any less dangerous to have that baseball thrown at you, with the only thing standing between you and the pitcher is a batter with a large wooden stick that might end up fouling the ball into a sensitive area of your body. I don’t care if you’re wearing a mask, you’re still going to get your bell rung by a foul ball off the grill. And how many times do we see batters causing catchers serious injury (yeah, I’m looking at you Scott Cousins). So catchers have to deal with this and try to hit? But pitchers, who are in considerably less danger on the field don’t have to hit? No dice, man.

Point is, you play a position on the field, you pick up a bat.

Ok, I’m finished.

Someone needs to tie the NBA and NHL execs to a chair and force them to watch this last week of games. Showing them why it is not a good idea to invite sixteen teams to the playoffs. who knows if those two leagues had pennant races maybe the NBA and NHL would have a meaningful regular season game every now and then.
