So I've read a couple intereesting articles on WAR today. The first is From JC Bradbury (courtesy of Justin F.). I think he makes some excellent points about the flaws of WAR. The second Courtesy via link from Bill at crashburn alley provides a different perspective.
Personally, I fall somewhere in the middle. I find WAR to be the most clear cut single digit value defining formula out there, but I don't believe it to be without flaws, specifically the following:
1. It's definition of positional value
Maybe it's just me, but I've never really understood why they don't just eliminate positional value altogether, and rank players by position)
2. How it actually values "replacement level"
3. Even as someone with a fairly good grasp on sabermetrics, I can't explain WAR to the common fan. any other Sabermetric statistic I can justify pretty easily.
Thought this might make for an interesting discussion.
Thoughts....
