We can always bring him back next year. Or maybe in 2015.

Or, this July after the Rockies cut him for giving up 88 Home Runs.

by Cormican on Jan 19, 2012 10:00 AM EST up reply actions

You won’t be laughing after he wins his first Cy Young!

I’m happy he’s getting a shot. Good for him.

My love for Moyer is eternal. I’m so glad he’s back in baseball.

Me too.

Well, good for you, Jamie. I’d sure hoped you’d come back to us, but I’m glad to see you’re catching on somewhere. Best of luck. I’ll keep wearing your jersey.

Now, Ruben, trade some prospects for the crafty veteran!

Good luck Jamie. We’ll always have 2008.

How the hell am I/are we supposed to watch Rockies games?

Oh, well. At least I can keep up with the Ageless Wonder, thanks to the MLB AB app.

I do have a connection to the Fort Collins area. My uncle lives there, so we do have a Rockies fan in the family.

by Sisko on Jan 18, 2012 9:17 PM EST reply actions

Easy enough for me, living in Denver and all. If he makes the club, I’ll definitely catch a few games that he pitches, even though he’ll likely be clobbered due to Coors Field being Coors Field and all.

by RaptorLC on Jan 19, 2012 4:52 AM EST up reply actions

MLB.tv would give you all of the games, and can be watched through the AtBat app- (just watch your data useage as it will be intense). Some of the games may also be shown as AtBat free games of the day. Hope this helps.

If I’m looking at the “oldest players” list on Baseball reference correctly, if Moyer appears in a game this year he’ll be the oldest guy to appear in a game since Hoyt Wilhelm in 1972.

All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia

by Veni Vidi Vici on Jan 18, 2012 9:50 PM EST reply actions

still a ways to go to catch up with Satchel Paige though!

by perfectdepth on Jan 18, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

esp. as he’ll be wearing a god awful uni. Maybe he can teach those kids the proper way to wear their sanitaries.

by j reed on Jan 18, 2012 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, he’s part of the 2008 WFC, but I’ll always remember the job he did a year earlier, shutting down the Nationals on the last day of the season and helping the team finally, finally break that string of close but not quite seasons.

Thanks Jamie, and we’ll see you back at CBP in a few years for the Wall of Fame induction.

rockies now have nine starting pitchers

Jorge De La Rosa
Jhoulys Chacin
Jason Hammel
Drew Pomeranz
Alex White
Tyler Chatwood
Kevin Slowey
Guillermo Moscoso
Jamie Moyer

by taco pal on Jan 18, 2012 11:51 PM EST reply actions

Guillermo Moscoso…now that’s a cool ass name.

by j reed on Jan 19, 2012 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

He distinguished himself last year by having the worst xFIP in major league baseball (min 100 IP)

by taco pal on Jan 19, 2012 12:46 AM EST up reply actions

Tyler Chatwood was second worst, although in fairness he’s very young and a legit prospect

by taco pal on Jan 19, 2012 12:47 AM EST up reply actions

My girlfriend went on a date with him in high school. Her mom was his English teacher. Always funny seeing his name – closest MLB personal connection. Too bad he’s nothing special.

Fare thee well, JM. In my book, you were the Greatest.

They got 2 more, didn’t they do a trade with the A’s recently too? Josh Outman is still a SP when healthy right?

by Ant on Jan 19, 2012 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps that should be 8 starting pitchers.

by j reed on Jan 19, 2012 2:06 AM EST up reply actions

Not to mention pitching a no hitter for several innings against the Phils in interleague play

by Walcott on Jan 19, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Sure, but Jhoulys Chacin? That makes Gui-Mo sound like a pansy.

I hope that Moyer makes their rotation. He deserves another year. Hell, he’s earned another year.

by Phrozen on Jan 19, 2012 2:50 AM EST up reply actions

Vance Worley could end up having a better season than all 9 of them.

by philsandthrills on Jan 19, 2012 12:46 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah but Coors Field will help their staff out a lot./s

All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia

Eight- Slowey was traded to the Indians yesterday.

GMs always talk about signing players for being “good clubhouse guys.” And it’s a nice thing to say, etc. But with it being such a big part of the Jamie Moyer aura, I always thought Amaro should put his money where his mouth is and, after Jamie’s playing days are over, give him a job with some ambiguous title to just travel with the team and be a “good clubhouse guy”, telling stories of the good old days and offering encouragement to the young whippersnappers.

I’d also like to see this happen with Pedro Martinez. Hire him, give him some title, and have him do all of the post-game press conferences with Charlie. For real, 20 minutes of Charlie and Pedro answering questions every night would be a ratings bonanza.

by topherstarr on Jan 19, 2012 11:11 AM EST reply actions

I would appreciate the second scenario.

But, seriously, as for the first, what are the chances of JM coming back as pitching coach once Rich Dubee hangs them up? Knowing what I do (read: little), he seems like he would be a natural. Always mentoring the younger folks (my favorite was when CSN cut to a shot of him in the dugout during a game explaining something to Doc. I mean, come on. Doc.), a really smart pitcher, has seen probably everything there is to see in baseball. He could end up being a perfect fit.

by Missing Jamie Moyer on Jan 19, 2012 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

If Jamie wants to coach, the Mariners of Phillies organizations would be the obvious places. It seems like a lot of players like to take a few years after their playing career to stay at home with their family or whatever, but considering the Jamie is still trying to play, I’d guess he’d be ready to head right back on the road. And obviously, from everything that’s ever been written about the man, he has the personal attributes to be an awesome coach.

How long will Dubee be around? Who knows? But I’m trying to think of someone who went directly to coaching in the big leagues without coaching in the minor leagues first, and Mark McGwire is the only recent name that comes to mind. Not that I really ever paid attention to that, though.

So here’s the scenario: Jamie pitches for another year or two, and then he coaches somewhere in the Phillies system for a year or two. When Cholly retires, they bring in a new staff including Jamie as pitching coach and Jamie’s former teammate Ryne Sandberg as manager.

by topherstarr on Jan 19, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Heck, Jamie could be pitching coach for Reading (not far from home) and only travel regionally. That would seem to give him plenty of time at home and let him help groom young pitchers. Honestly, that’s where he would seem to be best, in my mind.

by Cormican on Jan 19, 2012 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds like a great fit. Do you have any idea if Jamie still owns a home in the area? I remember hearing that Jamie has a home in Seattle, because Cliff Lee’s family lived there when Cliff pitched for the Mariners. Although I think it was on the market last year, so I shouldn’t say that he definitely still has it.

by topherstarr on Jan 19, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t. I figured having frown up in Souderton(?) he’d have family and friends in the area and amenable to settling down in the area. Of course, he could also settle in Florida and coach in the FSL, with even more minimal travel. Of course, he could coach with the Tacoma Rainiers, but the PCL is so damned spread out, you may as well just coach in the Majors at that point, if you can.

by Cormican on Jan 19, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

As someone who grew up in Souderton, I can tell you I never want to go back. But that’s just me.

Jamie’s kids will all be grown in not too long.

by taco pal on Jan 19, 2012 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Moyer for Dubee. That gets my vote as the self-elected President of the Not a Fan Of Dubee Club.

by j reed on Jan 22, 2012 4:24 AM EST up reply actions

Just the mere idea of Moyer’s wife being in business together with Pat Burrell’s wife gave me hope for a brighter tomorrow.

by Wet Luzinski on Jan 19, 2012 7:27 PM EST reply actions

The idea that Pat Burrell is or was ever married blows my mind. I’ll tell you this, Pat the Bat would never be tied down like that.

by topherstarr on Jan 20, 2012 9:02 AM EST up reply actions

BOLD PREDICTION !!!!!

Moyer ends up facing the Phillies and lobs a no hitter (until after the 7th when he gets pulled after 120 pitches)

How's your wife and my kids?

Hehehe…. I could see it happening.
