As reported by MLB Trade Rumors (actually reported by them, too).
We all knew this was coming, so as a courtesy I send you to our November posts discussing Mr. Burrell.

I'm both too busy at work & too lazy in general to rephrase this in bolg comnent firm, so I'm just reposting my facebook tribute
Attention citizens of San Francisco: Hide your wives and daughters, because a certain lady killing ‘Machine’ now has a lot more time on his hands. That’s right… Pat the Bat Burrell has decided to retire from baseball.
Forget the slumps. Forget the platinum hair. Forget the fact that you have twice as many World Series RINGS as you have World Series HITS… because when that hit came, it was the biggest of your career and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Bad seasons, tussles with the press, and countless Paternity Suits filed in Philly-area courthouses all fade from memory, but the 2008 Philadelphia Philles will forever be World Phuckin Champions, and you played a crucial role in making that happen.
Fare thee well, Pat the Bat. Thanks for the trophy, and I’ll cheer heartily when you’re announced on alumni day. I’d pour one out for you, but you’d probably deck me for wasting good Scotch.

I did mean to write ‘bolg’; ZWR habit.
“firm”, however, was supposed to be “form”..
Friggin Droid…

Could you imagine..
If that double off of the wall had been 5-10 feet higher and Pat the Bat/Leg/Glove had hit the GW homerun for us?
Yup, just like I think about how if Mad Dog hadn’t blown the lead, Colebert would have made postseason history.
Then I think about the 3 years since, slap myself upside the head and remind myself that I’ll take that Championship however it comes.

Love the Jenkins. I was sad when he was cut after the parade. Not because they should have kept him, mind you (Werth earned the everyday spot, making him redundant), but because he was crying when Action News shoved the camera in his face ten minutes after Rube pulled the trigger.
From a completely performance-unrelated standpoint, my buddies and I would love when they pinch hit GJ in key, late-innings at-bats, because someone would always yell, “Alright, thumbs up let’s do this – Geoffrrrrreeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy JEN-KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNSSSSSS!!!!”
Stupid as it was, by the time the playoffs rolled around, our whole section was doing it.

roof at Shea they’ve come to hit majestic bombs the
ballpark illuminates itself imaginary outfield fences creep
toward home O rookie minions run home O starry
spangled jock of mercy the eternal game is
here O victory OMG I forgot my underwear we’re
free
I’m with you in San Fran
in my dreams you ride smiling in your dog-
parade down the Broad Street across Philadelphia with beers
to the core of my being on a baseball night

CSN SportsNite says, " A hero from the 2008 World Series Phillies team hangs them up," and I’m sure a lot of people said, “Well, you had a long career, Jamie.”
Just talkin about practice

PTB was a pretty easy guy to root for. Gamer, class act, big time production. Carried them for stretches in ’07 and ’08. Wishing him a long and happy retirement.

dajafi was just saying about a class act?

Bye Bye Pat the Bat
In other news Phillies sign RHP Chad Qualls to a $1.15 mil – 1 yr deal.
Rather had Lidge or a LHP for the bullpen but a solid signing.
Interesting read from fangraphs
Interestingly, Burrell’s career offensive line is the median. He’s exactly what you should expect from a hitter if you take one with the top pick in the draft…
That article is required Pat the Bat reading. And so is this one.

And this, not just because it is self-referential.

Phils GM, Manuel weigh in on several pressing topics
Don’t be surprised to see Burrell, who announced his retirement on Monday, sign a one-day contract and retire with the Phils.
“We are considering it,” Amaro said.
In that case, if any of yalls want a souvenir Burrell jersey for the road, better order it, stat. Once he retires as a Phillie, you won’t be allowed to personalize Phillies jerseys with his name.
DGAF, already got mine
Fare thee well, JM. In my book, you were the Greatest.
