SBN Awards: Dickey, Verlander Claim Pitcher of the Year Honors; Lee, Hamels Receive Votes

Stephen Dunn

Mets' knuckleballer R.A. Dickey narrowly wins award in National League over 2011 Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, while the Tigers' Justin Verlander can console himself after the World Series sweep with American League honors. Phillies starters Cliff Lee (fifth) and Cole Hamels (seventh) also appeared on voters' ballots.

Mets starting pitcher R.A. Dickey and the Tigers Justin Verlander received their respective leagues' SBN Pitcher of the Year Awards, voted on by the editors and writers of the SB Nation baseball sites.

The 38 year old Dickey, who reinvented his career as a knuckleballer just a couple years ago, narrowly beat out 2011 Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers, collecting 157 points against 154 points for Dickey. Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez finished third.

Despite being the losing loser who ever lost, Phillies ace Cliff Lee finished fifth on the ballot, receiving five third place votes, and Cole Hamels placed seventh, receiving nine total votes.

Justin Verlander won American League honors handily, topping second place finisher David Price of the Rays 171 to 103.
