Mets and Jason Bay to part ways

Shot down in a blaze of glory - Alex Trautwig

Jason Bay and the Mets have agreed to part ways, making the once elite OF a free agent on the cheap

Multiple Media Outlets are reporting that Jason Bay and the Mets have decided to part ways. Bay will receive all of the $21mm left on his $66mm deal, with most of it being deferred. Bay is now considered a free agent and will likely look to reestablish himself on a one year deal.

By doing this, essentially, Bay can take a lesser deal due to complicated union rules, than if he was simply released.

Bay signed his lucrative deal with the Mets after putting up a 2 consecutive .900 OPS 30+HR/100+ RBI seasons in 2008 and 2009, and was one of the most durable OFs in the game from 2005-2009.

Things went south in Flushing as Bay played a total of 288 games for the Mets over 3 seasons, with a combined slash of 234/318/369. He hit just 26 HRs and drove in 124 runs TOTAL over 3 seasons.

That said, in 2011, he put up a slash line of 300/418/500 against LHP, with 22BB and 32K's in 134 plate appearances.

For a real cheap no risk deal, I can think of worse ideas than taking a chance on a guy looking to reestablish himself, as a RH platoon partner. And MAN, can you imagine how awesome it would be if Bay took off as a Phillie? I mean the schadenfreude alone is worth $1,000,000 to me.

Keep your eyes on this one guys. Catz has a feeling.
