Punchless, Choochless: Blue Jays 3, Phillies 0

Blue Jays starter Drew Hutchison injured his elbow on the game's third batter. Never fear, the Blue Jays' bullpen held the suddenly punchless Phillies to five hits and no runs, as the Blue Jays took advantage of a key error from Phillies third baseman Mike Fontenot en route to a 3-0 victory last night in Toronto.

Oh, and also, the Phillies lost catcher Carlos Ruiz to a left oblique strain after an awkward swing in the sixth inning, an injury that will likely require a trip to the Disabled List, and badly damages the red-hot Chooch's All-Star candidacy.

I suppose it's not totally fair to blame this one on Mike Fontenot. The Blue Jays did score one run, which was all they would need, on back-to-back doubles by Rajai Davis and Brett Lawrie in the third inning off Vance Worley. The error came in the fourth on a shattered bat, potential double play grounder from Edwin Encarnacion. Whether he was distracted by the flying bat barrel or not, we'll never know, but Fontenot proceeded to air mail the throw to the most desolate portions of right field, allowing Jose Bautista to score from first, and Encarnacion to advance to third, from which he'd score on an RBI groundout from Yunel Escobar. Both runs were unearned, but who cares? (Harry Kalas, love you). Worley's pitching was mostly pretty crisp -- seven innings, five strikeouts, two walks, five hits, and just one earned run.

Not much to say about the Phillies' offensive effort, five hits by five batters, only one -- a double down the line from Hunter Pence in the third -- went for extra bases. A weak effort for a cobbled together bullpen game, that's for damn sure.

Enjoy your day.
