Salisbury: Phillies "seriously considering" adding outfielder Delmon Young

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

Young, 27, has not lived up to his lofty draft status, spending parts of seven seasons with three American League teams, and courting off-the-field controversy.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies are "seriously considering" signing free agent outfielder Delmon Young.

Salisbury also mentions that the Phillies are still looking at free agent Scott Hairston, and discussing a trade for Angels' outfielder Vernon Wells.

Young, 27, was drafted first overall in the 2003 amateur draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He posted his best season in 2010 for the Minnesota Twins, going .298/.333/.493 with 21 home runs and 112 RBI. Young also won the 2012 ALCS MVP award after going .353/.421/.765 with two home runs in the Tigers' sweep of the Yankees.

Although purportedly an "outfielder," Young played most of 2012 as the Tigers' designated hitter, and found himself without a job when the Tigers signed free agent outfielder Torii Hunter late last year.

Young has been involved in controversy off the field, as well, including last April's arrest outside a New York hotel, where an intoxicated Young was heard spouting anti-Semitic slurs.

If the question becomes who the right-handed hitting Young displaces, it could mean Darin Ruf is destined for Triple-A Lehigh Valley (not a bad thing). Young is also pretty brutal defensively. When you're a 27 year old designated hitter, that kind of speaks volumes.

In the long run, the guy isn't very good at all, and is kind of a creep, but from a strictly on-field perspective, if signed for a small enough contract, there might, might be some breakthrough potential. The Phillies in 2013 will be relying on hope - hoping Roy Halladay returns to something close to form, that Michael Young hits more like 2011 than 2012, that Chase Utley and Ryan Howard can be on the field for more than 130 games a piece. Why not one more hopeful cause?
