Behold, the NYPL's AG Spaulding Baseball Collection. Over five hundred lithographs and daguerreotypes, including a great many of the Phillies (nee Quakers) and their erstwhile crosstown neighbors, the Athletic.
Take a gander at Quakers Charlie Ferguson, wearing an onion on his belt, as was the style at the time; or Arthur Irwin, who seems to be signalling "safe" even as he tags the runner (named Tom McCarthy) out.
Better yet, check out Cannonball Titcomb, who left the Quakers to join the rival American Association Athletic in 1887. Also, "Cannonball Titcomb."
All kinds of great stuff there. H/T to Mrs. Phrozen for the links.
