Yuni, We Hardly Knew Ya

Juuuuuust a bit outside. - USA TODAY Sports

On the eve of our Yunieskontent, the Phillies have given Yuniesky Betancourt the release he asked for.

With Betancourt now gone, the Phillies are likely to break camp with Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen as backup infielders.

Yuni tore up the Grapefruit League, posting an unbelievable .447/.451/.574/1.025 line, with, more believably, only two walks in 51 PAs. He hit one homerun.

Betancourt will likely catch on somewhere. GM Ruben Amaro noted as much, saying that this release was a difficult decision, but would be best for the Phillies and Betancourt. There are several teams in need of a shortstop, and, with his Spring performance, someone will be calling.

I think it's safe to say that this was the right decision. I don't know if any trade options were explored with the Dodgers needing a temporary replacement for Hanley Ramirez, or the Cardinals mistrust of Pete Kozma, but Betancourt, despite his gaudy spring, is a known quantity. As Rooster Cogburn said in True Grit, "it is a dead body. Possibly worth something in trade." But you certainly can't count on that.

Also, in unrelated news, the Yankees appear to have traded something for Vernon Wells.
