Ben Revere breaks foot, Kratz activated

Hunter Martin

It's not like Revere was swinging a hot bat or anything. And he certainly wasn't one of the sole bright spots of this season. I'm sure he won't be missed. *cries*

UPDATE 7/14: Ben Revere has officially been placed on the DL. Erik Kratz, who has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee, has been activated. For those keeping count, the Phillies have three catchers on their roster and no actual center fielder. Thank God the All-Star break starts tomorrow.

The Phillies had runners in scoring position in the 9th and 10th innings of the first game of today's doubleheader with the Chicago White Sox. Both times, the Phillies couldn't get a run to cross the plate to break the tie. They'd pay for it in the top of the 11th when the White Sox scored two runs to end the stalemate.

What the Phillies didn't know is that they'd pay for it in a more long term manner in the bottom of the 11th, when Ben Revere came to the plate and fouled a ball off his ankle. Revere hit the dirt but finished the at-bat. I had hoped that him finishing the at-bat was a good sign, instead of being due to the Phillies having no one left on the bench. My hopes were dashed tonight when the news came down that Revere has broken his right foot and will be going on the disabled list. He'll be reevaluated Monday, when I assume a time frame for his return will be announced.

This is just depressing and putrid, and a huge blow to the Phillies. Revere had been on fire lately -- Todd Zolecki pointed out that he'd been hitting .327 since the end of April. As far as who will be called-up, who knows. I've seen several names bandied about on twitter -- Tyson Gillies and Cesar Hernandez mainly. And of course, the specter of Michael Martinez follows us everywhere, haunting our dreams. Michael Martinez exists now as a white flag of surrender in human form.
