Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 15, 2013

Wouldn't it be nice for Halladay to be Halladay again? - Doug Pensinger

Syracuse 2, Lehigh Valley 1

David Buchanan - 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 8 GB, 4 FB
Pete Orr - 1 for 3, R, K, SB, HBP
Freddy Galvis - 0 for 3
Josh Fields - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, K
Leandro Castro - 0 for 4
Cameron Rupp, 2 for 4, 2B, K
Tyson Gillies - 2 for 4, K

David Buchanan was largely undeserving of the loss.  He was cruising until the 7th when he allowed both earned runs.  The offense was stagnant and was a woeful 0 for 10 with RISP.  Buchanan has actually been great since being called up to AAA.  Strikeouts are very low at both levels this year.  He is likely organizational filler, but it's encouraging to see his success with the promotion thus far.  Gillies continues hitting the ball! That is his 3rd multi-hit game in the last 5 games.  He has a 5 game hitting streak going.  This is honestly great to see with Gillies who has struggled through most of the year.  Rupp also has been on a tear as of late.  I wonder how he figures into the catching plans for the Phillies next season...

Binghamton 9, Reading 3

Jonathan Pettibone - 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K, 7 GB, 2 FB
Zach Collier - 2 for 4, HR, K, CS (outfield assist)
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4, R
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB
Anthony Hewitt - 1 for 3, RBI, K
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 4, K

Pettibone with his 1st rehab start coming back from injury before he returns to the big club.  Typical line for Pettibone, but you'd expect slightly better at the AA.  Zach Collier continues his torrid streak (6 game hitting streak) and smashes his 8th home run on the season.  For Collier to succeed, he is going to have to continue making contact as he strikes out a lot and doesn't walk enough.

Clearwater 4, Daytona 2

Severino Gonzalez - 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 2 GB, 4 FB
Jiwan James - 0 for 3, K (outfield assist)
Cameron Perkins - 0 for 3, BB, K, CS
Chris Serritella - 0 for 4
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 4, 2 R, 3B
Brock Stassi - 2 for 4, R, 2 RBI, SB
Harold Martinez - 3 for 4, R, SB
Jose Mojica - 2 for 4, 2 RBI

So when do we really start to take notice at what Gonzalez is doing? His last 5 starts have been collectively really good.  Based on what BA had said about him a week ago, his fastball is gaining velocity.  The strikeouts are the biggest wow factor and the most encouraging.  I'm sure the hype machine will continue to roll as the season winds down.

Kannapolis 2, Lakewood 0

Jeb Stefan - 6 IP, 4 R, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 9 GB, 4 FB
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 4, 2 K
Alejandro Villalobos - 1 for 4 (fielding error)
Willie Carmona - 1 for 4, K
Art Charles - 1 for 3, BB, K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 4, K, CS, picked off
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 2, BB
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 3, 2 K

Yikes...not much Stefan could do to win this game despite allowing just 1 run.  The offense combines for just 5 hits, with only 3 runners ever reaching 2nd.  Stefan remains a pretty interesting pitching prospect.  His numbers are pretty much identical to when he was in the NY/Penn last year.  It will be nice to continue to watch him move up the organizational ladder.

Williamsport 3, Auburn 2

Shane Martin - 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, BB, 2 K, 10 GB, 2 FB (fielding error)
Herlis Rodriguez - 0 for 3, BB
Andrew Knapp - 0 for 3, BB, K
Zach Green - 1 for 4, HR, 2 K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K
Logan Pierce - 1 for 3, R, BB
Gustavo Martinez - 2 for 4
Jairo Cardozo - 1 for 3, RBI, BB, K

Shane Martin gets back on track after a rough last outing.  Strikeouts are low, the walks are not terribly high...but he has only allowed 21 ER in 51.2 innings.  He has been a bright spot this season for the Crosscutters.  Zach Green smacks his league leading 11th home run on the season.  For the prospect experts who read this...was Zach Green projected to have this much power?  I think I read the Crosscutter record for HR in a season is 13.  At this rate, he might come close to tying or surpassing that.  Does he stick at 3B?

GCL Phillies 4, GCL Pirates 3

Roy Halladay - 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR, 10 GB, 1 FB
Venn Biter - 0 for 3, RBI
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, K
JP Crawford - 2 for 4, R, K, SB
Nick Ferdinand - 0 for 3
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 2, R, 3B, RBI, K, HBP
Robinson Torres - 1 for 3, K
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBI
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 3, R, 2 K, SB

The Doc with a rehab start with the GCL.  That honestly had to be a thrill for both teams.  Not often of someone like Roy's caliber gets a start down that low.  I know I would have been giddy.  Halladay's start was a bit uneven.  I haven't read any reports on the game as of yet to see the kind of velocity and movement he was getting on his pitches.  Or even what pitches he was allowed to throw to get a good judgment.  JP Crawford snaps his 2 game hitless streak by hitting 2 and stealing his 12th base on the season.  Grullon's 2 run homer in the bottom of the 7th proved to be the winning runs.  GCL Phillies take the division lead, despite being 1 game below .500.
