Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 16-18, 2013

Beautiful night in Williamsport.

Lehigh Valley 3, Syracuse 2 (August 16)

Greg Smith - 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 7 K, HR, 5 GB, 4 FB
Mauricio Robles - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 3, R, SB
Freddy Galvis - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, K
Leandro Castro - 0 for 4, K
Cameron Rupp - 2 for 4, R (passed ball)
Tyson Gillies - 1 for 2, BB

Greg Smith pitches a gem to get the win and Robles picks up his 5th save on the season.  Robles was literally perfect in this game.  Cesar Hernandez appears to be back and picked up his 30th SB on the season.  The IronPigs take the series 2 to 3.  This is their 2nd consecutive series win in a row.

Lehigh Valley 4, Scranton/WB 3 (August 17)

Adam Morgan - 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 3 GB, 5 FB
Phillippe Aumont - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Mauricio Robles - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, K
Pete Orr - 2 for 6, RBI, K
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 5, BB, K
Steve Susdorf - 1 for 6, R, 2B, 2 K
Tyler Henson - 3 for 5, 2 2B, RBI, 2 K
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 4, R, RBI, 2 K
Cameron Rupp - 2 for 4, HR, BB
Tyson Gillies - 1 for 3, K, HBP

Phillippe Aumont blows the game and win for Adam Morgan.  Morgan hasn't gone beyond 80ish pitches in his starts since coming back from injury.  In the time he has pitched however, has been highly encouraging.  Morgan should get a shot at the rotation in spring training next year.  The game would go into extras.  In the top of the 11th Cameron Rupp would hit a solo blast to put the IronPigs ahead.  Rupp is really making a case to be part of the catching corps in Philly come September and possibly next season as a backup.

Scranton/WB 2, Lehigh Valley 0 (August 18)

Tom Cochran - 5.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 4 K, 4 GB, 3 FB
Freddy Galvis - 0 for 4
Steve Susdorf - 2 for 3, 2B, BB, 2 CS
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 2, BB, K
Leandro Castro - 1 for 3, 2B, K
Tyson Gillies - 0 for 3, SB

The game was 0-0 going into the bottom of the 9th.  Cochran and Justin Friend skated around any trouble for 8 innings before Jay Johnson entered the game.  He then promptly gave up a 1 out double and then a walkoff 2 run homer to end the game.  Johnson has not been particularly good since being promoted from Reading in late July.  Lehigh sits 2.5 games back in the wildcard despite winning 2 of 3 this weekend.

Akron 3, Reading 2 (August 16)

Bobby Bramhall - 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K, 4 GB, 3 FB (pickoff error)
Austin Wright - 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Matt Tolbert - 3 for 4, 2 R, K, CS
Zach Collier - 0 for 2, K
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI
Jim Murphy - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, K
Kelly Dugan - 0 for 4, 3 K
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 4
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 3

Bramhall's conversion to a starter has been a mixed bucket.  His last start was atrocious, but this one he was absolutely on point and left the game in a good position to win.  Austin Wright wouldn't have anything of it and gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game.  Mike Nesseth would relieve Wright and let up another earned run, which would be the eventual game winner.

Akron 5, Reading 3 (August 17)

Mario Hollands - 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 K, 7 GB, 4 FB
Zach Collier - 3 for 4, R
Maikel Franco - 0 for 3
Jim Murphy - 1 for 3, HR, BB, 2 K
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, HR, K
Matt Tolbert - 1 for 4, K
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 3, RBI, BB, K
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 4, 2 K

It's a bit of a rollercoaster as to what you will get with a Hollands start lately.  This start was obviously a very good one.  Hollands strikes out a decent amount of batters, which should make him a fast riser in the organization.  Murphy with his 20th home run on the season.  He is 2 away from tying his career high back in 2011 with Lakewood.  Dugan with his 7th dinger.  Hollands left the game with a 2-0 lead, but Kyle Simon would give up 3 ER in the bottom of the 8th to eventually lose the game.

Akron 4, Reading 1 (August 18)

Jesse Biddle - 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 7 K, HR, 6 GB, 5 FB
Albert Cartwright - 1 for 4, BB
Zach Collier - 0 for 2, BB, K, HBP
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, R, K
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 2, 2 BB

Biddle seems to be righting the ship for the most part, which is a huge thing.  He has been battling some command issues and this was his first game not walking a batter ALL SEASON.  Kind of crazy to think about it.  The bats were silent this weekend and the Fightin's get swept by Akron in the 3 game series.

Clearwater 9, Dunedin 3 (August 16)

Ethan Stewart - 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 4 GB, 5 FB
Jiwan James - 3 for 4, 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI, HBP
Carlos Alonso - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 5, R, RBI, K
Chris Serritella - 1 for 5, R, RBI, K (throwing error)
Cameron Perkins - 2 for 3, R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Harold Martinez - 3 for 4, R, 2B, RBI

Holy cow man! Threshers breakout for 16 hits to topple Dunedin.  Stewart with his best start in what feels like months.  Everyone in the lineup contributed in this game.

Clearwater 2, Dunedin 0 (August 17)

Hoby Milner - 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 6 K, 6 GB, 4 FB
Carlos Alonso - 0 for 2, R, BB, HBP
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, RBI, 2 K, SB
Chris Serritella - 1 for 3, R
Cameron Perkins - 1 for 3
Brock Stassi - 1 for 3, RBI, K
Harold Martinez - 0 for 3, K

Hoby Milner pitches his best game of the season for the Threshers.  The kid has been very good in August and continues to show flashes of being an interesting prospect.

Clearwater 7, Dunedin 6 (August 18)

Nic Hanson - 5 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 K, HR, 4 GB, 4 FB
Jiwan James - 2 for 4, R, 2B
Peter Lavin - 2 for 5, R, RBI, CS
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 5, RBI, K, SB (outfield assist)
Chris Serritella - 1 for 5, 2 K
Brock Stassi - 2 for 4, 2 R, 2 K, SB
Jonathan Roof - 1 for 4, R, 3B, RBI
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB, 2 K
Logan Moore - 2 for 3, 2 RBI

Nic Hanson hasn't been very good since being called up from Lakewood.  The bullpen and offense did however bail him out.  Steve Inch and Colton Murray would combine for 4 innings of 1 hit ball.  The Threshers would score 2 in the top of the 10th to tie and take the lead after loading the bases with no outs.  Clearwater sweeps the 3 game series with Dunedin.  Clearwater is in line to be the wildcard if the playoffs started today.

Delmarva 2, Lakewood 0 (August 16)

Ramon Oviedo - 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 7 K, 1 GB, 2 FB
Willie Carmona - 1 for 3
Brian Pointer - 0 for 3, 3 K
Larry Greene - 0 for 3, 3 K
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 3, K
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 3, 3 K
Angelo Mora - 1 for 3, K, CS

Lakewood combines for 2 hits and strikeout 16 times in this game.  They walk none and leave only 1 runner on base all game.  Oviedo pitches very well, but doesn't get a win to show for it.

Lakewood 3, Delmarva 0 (August 17)

Jon Prosinski - 4.2 IP, 8 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K, 6 GB, 2 FB
Willie Carmona - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 3, R, BB
Carlos Tocci - 0 for 4, 3 K
Larry Greene - 1 for 2, 2 R, 2 BB, K, SB
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 3, RBI, BB (passed ball, throwing error)
Angelo Mora - 3 for 4, 2 RBI, SB, CS, picked off

Prosinski was back on track this game after 2 subpar performances.  The offense actually contributed this game and was able to muster up some runs in the 7th and 9th innings.

Lakewood, Delmarva (August 18, postponed due to rain)

Batavia 5, Williamsport 2 (August 16)

Mitch Gueller - 4 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 GB, 3 FB
Herlis Rodriguez - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 3, 2B, BB, K
Zach Green - 0 for 4, K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 3, 2 R, BB, K, SB
Logan Pierce - 1 for 3, BB

Mitch Gueller, what has happened this season? A promising arm, but has been largely disappointing this season.  The offense didn't do much to help his cause, though it was nice to see another XBH from Knapp and a SB from Cozens (his 9th on the year).

Williamsport 11, Batavia 0 (August 17)

Drew Anderson - 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 9 GB, 3 FB
Herlis Rodriguez - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 K
Justin Parr - 3 for 5, 3 R, 2 K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, RBI, 2 BB
Zach Green - 1 for 3, 3 R, 2B, RBI, SB, HBP
Samuel Hiciano - 3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, K

Drew Anderson continued his string of good pitching and the offense erupted for 11 runs on 13 hits.  Hiciano doubled his RBI total on the season in 1 game.  Both of his homers were 3 run homers.  Cozens to continues drawing walks.  Williamsport splits the 2 game series with Batavia.

Williamsport 8, Mahoning Valley 0 (August 18)

Yacksiel Rios - 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K, 3 GB, 3 FB
Mark Meadows - 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K
Manny Martinez - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Justin Parr - 2 for 5, 2B
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 4, R, K, SB
Zach Green - 1 for 4, R, RBI
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 3, 2 R, 3B, BB, K
Samuel Hiciano - 2 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, BB, K
Gustavo Martinez - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI, SB

Combined no-hitter for Williamsport!! Knapp was behind the plate for this game, which I'm sure is a huge thrill and boost to his stock as a catcher.  This has to be exciting for all those involved in the game.  Williamsport has now scored 19 runs in two days, while allowing none.

GCL Tigers 4, GCL Phillies 2 (August 16, Game 1 of doubleheader)

Jesen Therrien - 8 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 K, 2 HR, 11 GB, 2 FB
Herlis Rodriguez - 0 for 1, BB, CS
JP Crawford - 0 for 3, BB, K
Nick Ferdinand - 1 for 4, 2 K
Wilmer Oberto - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB, K
Jose Pujols - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB

Therrien goes 8 innings (his longest outing of the year), but takes the loss in this one.  The offense could only muster up 2 hits in support.  You won't win too many games this way.

GCL Phillies 3, GCL Tigers 1 (August 16, Game 2 of doubleheader)

Feliberto Sanchez - 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 7 K, 2 GB, 4 FB
Jair Morelos - 1 for 3, R
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 3, 3B, 2 RBI
JP Crawford - 0 for 3, K
Nick Ferdinand - 2 for 3, HR
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 3, R (passed ball)
Jan Hernandez -  0 for 3, 2 K

A really strong showing from Sanchez who notches the win.  The 7 strikeouts are really great to see.  Nick Ferdinand blasts his 4th on the season.

GCL Phillies 5, GCL Tigers 2 (August 17)

Alejandro Arteaga - 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 3 K, 7 GB, 5 FB
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4
Nick Ferdinand - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI
Wilmer Oberto - 3 for 4, R
Robinson Torres - 1 for 2, R, BB
Jose Pujols - 0 for 3, BB, SB, CS
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 4, 3 K, SB

GCL Phils survive despite being outhit 11 to 7 in this game.  Arteaga squeaks by with the victory.  It will be interesting to see how this offense does without Crawford and Herlis Rodriguez in the lineup.  Both were promoted to Lakewood and Williamsport, respectively, this weekend.  Ferdinand hits a homer for the 2nd game in a row, his 5th on the season.
