Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 26, 2013

Lakewood had the day off.

Buffalo 5, Lehigh Valley 2 (Game 1 of doubleheader)

Tom Cochran - 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 7 GB, 3 FB
Cesar Hernandez - 2 for 3, BB, K, CS
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 4, K
Michael Martinez - 2 for 3, HR
Leandro Castro - 2 for 3, R, 2B
Steve Lerud - 1 for 3, 2B, RBI

Tom Cochran, aside from his previous start, has been atrocious the last 2 months.  I can't imagine he stays with the organization beyond this season.  Positive takeaways from this game? Cesar is still playing CF and had another 2 hits in the game.  I know the Phillies are trying out Bernadina, but I like Cesar a bit more even if he is still unpolished in the outfield.

Lehigh Valley 3, Buffalo 2 (Game 2 of doubleheader, makeup of 7/12 ppd)

Mike Nesseth - 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 5 GB, 2 FB
Mauricio Robles - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 4, R, K
Freddy Galvis - 3 for 4, RBI
Steve Susdorf - 2 for 3, RBI
Michael Martinez - 1 for 3, R
Leandro Castro - 0 for 2
Cameron Rupp - 0 for 3
Derrick Mitchell - 1 for 3, RBI

Exciting finish to this game.  Lehigh Valley down 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th score 2 runs courtesy of RBI singles from Mitchell and Galvis to win the game.  This was a bullpen game for the IronPigs, but reliever Mike Nesseth goes 4 really strong innings.  Nesseth was recently promoted and this was his second appearance for Lehigh.  He was particularly strong in his 44 innings this year with Reading.  Robles with another great outing.  He hasn't given up an earned run since July 11.  That is a pretty impressive feat.  He will likely get a look when rosters expand on Sept 1 if Lehigh doesn't make the playoffs.

Reading 7, Richmond 6

Bobby Bramhall - 3 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 4 GB, 2 FB
Albert Cartwright - 1 for 3, R, HBP
Zach Collier - 1 for 4, R, RBI, BB
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K
Jim Murphy - 1 for 3, RBI, BB
Kelly Dugan - 2 for 5, HR, K
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 4, R
Troy Hanzawa - 2 for 4, K (fielding error)

After going down 6-1 in the top of the 3rd, things weren't looking particularly good.  Reading would throw up a 3 spot in the bottom of the 7th to bring the score to 6-4.  In the bottom of the 9th, Franco hits a 2 run bomb (30th HR and 100th RBI total) to tie it all up.  Kelly Dugan would come up to bat in the bottom of the 10th and end it with his 10th home run with Reading (20th this season).  The Bash Brothers came through.

Tampa 8, Clearwater 5

Luis Paulino - 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 3 GB, 3 FB
Jiwan James - 1 for 4, 2 R, BB, 2 K, SB
Peter Lavin - 3 for 4, R, 3B, 2 RBI, BB
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, BB
Chris Serritella - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, K
Brock Stassi - 1 for 4, BB
Jonathan Roof - 0 for 3, RBI, 2 K (throwing error)
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3, BB, K

In a wild back and forth game that was all tied up at 5 in the 9th inning, flamethrower Ken Giles would give up 3 runs and go on to lose the game. The offense otherwise had a pretty decent game.  Serritella hit his 12th dinger on the season.  Paulino with a forgetful start after back-to-back solid ones.  A disappointing loss for a team that needs to win a fair amount of games if it looks to hold onto it's wildcard position.

Williamsport 13, State College 5

Mitch Gueller - 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 5 GB, 2 FB
Justin Parr - 1 for 4, R, BB, 2 K, SB
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 3, 2 R, RBI, K
Dylan Cozens - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, K
Zach Green - 1 for 3, R, 2 RBI, K
Andrew Knapp - 4 for 5, 3 R, 3 2B, RBI
Samuel Hiciano - 1 for 4, 3 R, RBI, BB, K (outfield assist, 2nd base)
Herlis Rodriguez - 3 for 5, R, 3 RBI
Logan Pierce - 1 for 5, 2B, RBI, K
Malquin Canelo - 2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI

Everybody hits, woohoo!! With the exception of defensive replacements, the starting lineup with all at least one hit.  Andrew Knapp with 3 doubles! He has 17 of those on the year.  Cozens remains red hot and is an intriguing prospect to say the least.  It will be scary if he can put it all together over the next couple years.  Gueller with a half-decent respectable start in what seems like forever.  He at least limited his hits.  His previous 2 starts he had given up 20 total hits and 10 runs.

GCL Phillies 8, GCL Yankees1 6

Ranfi Casimiro - 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 7 GB, 2 FB
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 5, R, K
Jair Morelos - 1 for 4, 2 R, BB, 2 K (throwing error)
Nick Ferdinand - 1 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, BB
Wilmer Oberto - 2 for 4, 2 R, K, HBP
Robinson Torres - 1 for 3, R, 2 RBI, BB, HBP
Deivi Grullon - 3 for 3, R, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Jose Pujols - 0 for 5, RBI

GCL Phils bats came alive in this one with 11 hits and 6 walks!  Grullon, Sandberg and Oberto with multi-hit games.  Pujols is mired in a real bad funk after a promising couple of weeks and his batting .147/.237/.353 in his last 10 games.  I do have to say, the squads for Lakewood and Williamsport next year will probably be a lot of fun to follow.
