Phillies Minor League Roundup - May 2-4, 2014

Franco is getting hot! - Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Today's Probable Starters: LHV - Barry Enright, REA - Mike Nesseth, CLW - Ethan Stewart LWD - Mark Leiter

Lehigh Valley 6, Gwinnett 1 (May 2, 2014)

Jonathan Pettibone - 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 5 K, 6 GB, 2 FB
Jeremy Horst - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Seth Rosin - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Phillippe Aumont - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Clete Thomas - 1 for 4, 2 K, SB
Maikel Franco - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, K
Reid Brignac - 1 for 2, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Jim Murphy - 1 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, K

Jonathan Pettibone has now improved in each of his last 3 starts with LHV. The bullpen combined for a scoreless effort. Franco with 11 hits in his last 7 games. Jim Murphy with his 2nd homer of the season. He is a bit behind his pace from last season when he mashed 23 for Reading.

Lehigh Valley 2, Gwinnett 1 (May 3, 2014)

David Buchanan - 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 6 K, 5 GB, 4 FB
Cesar Jimenez - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Justin De Fratus - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Luis Garcia - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4, 2B, K
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, K (catcher interference error)
Matt Tolbert - 2 for 4, 2B, SB

David Buchanan with another great outing. Gwinnett actually outhits Lehigh in this game 9-4, but lose anyway. The Iron Pigs bullpen once again is lights out. Luis Garcia has yet to give up an earned run in 12 IP. Franco with another extra base hit, which gives him 7 in his last 7 games. Sebastian Valle hits his first home run on the year. He had 12 last year for Reading.

Lehigh Valley 11, Gwinnett 7 (May 4, 2014)

Greg Smith - 7 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR, 7 GB, 6 FB (throwing error)
Brad Lincoln - 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 2 K
Seth Rosin - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Tyler Henson - 4 for 5, 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, K
Maikel Franco - 0 for 4, R, BB, 2 K
Koyie Hill - 1 for 4, HR, BB, K
Jim Murphy - 2 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, BB

Slugfest! Gwinnett once again out hits Lehigh 15-10, but the Iron Pigs prevail! Tyler Henson with his first two homer runs on the season, while driving in 7 runs. Lehigh would go into the the bottom of the 9th with a 11-3 lead, but Brad Lincoln would sure make it interesting. He would surrender 4 runs on 5 hits before Rosin would come in to get the final out with two runners still on. Lehigh sweeps the 4 game set and are a game above .500. They open a 4 game series with Charlotte today.

Harrisburg 9, Reading 4 (May 2, 2014)

Hoby Milner - 5.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 4 HR
Austin Wright - 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER
Carlos Alonso - 1 for 5, 2 K
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, K
Cam Perkins - 1 for 3, R, BB, K, SB
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4, 2B, RBI, K (outfield assist, 3B)
Zach Collier - 0 for 4, 3 K
Edgar Duran - 2 for 2, R, 2 BB, SB

Hoby Milner gets busted up by some home runs and hasn't been very good since returning from the DL. Austin Wright has appeared in 8 games this season, he has given up earned runs in 4 of them and sports a 5.11 ERA through 12.1 IP. This kid was once an interesting prospect. Perkins continues to hit, but somehow also keeps lowering his batting average. For whatever reason, Collier keeps getting starts, but his confidence might just be completely shot.

Reading 5, Harrisburg 0 (May 3, 2014)

Perci Garner - 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K, 4 GB, 3 FB
Kyle Simon - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K, 5 GB, 0 FB
Ken Giles - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Cesar Hernandez - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI (throwing error)
Cam Perkins - 1 for 3, CS
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, 2 RBI, K, SB
Tommy Joseph - 0 for 4, 3 K
Zach Collier - 1 for 3, 2B
Chris Serritella - 1 for 1, HR

Perci Garner was dealing! Reports were he was throwing 93-94 and making his pitches. He has been excellent all season and has made the transition to AA pretty flawlessly. Cesar Hernandez with another HR, but also commits his 7th error at 3B. Tommy Joseph makes his return from the DL and was even behind the plate. I was surprised to see this and considering his concussion history, thought he would be out for a bit longer.

Reading 15, Harrisburg 2 (May 4, 2014)

Jesse Biddle - 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, HR
Carlos Alonso - 1 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, BB
Cesar Hernandez - 2 for 5, R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K (throwing error)
Cam Perkins - 2 for 6, R, 2 RBI
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI
Tommy Joseph - 4 for 5, 2 R, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, K
Zach Collier - 1 for 3, 2 R, 2B, BB, K, HBP
Anthony Hewitt - 2 for 5, 2 R, RBI (fielding error)
Edgar Duran - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI

Jesse Biddle gets back on track and the lineup breaks out for 15 runs on 18 hits. The entire lineup actually had a hit, save for Biddle. Biddle opposing batting average now stands at .200. Hernandez with his 8th error over at the hot corner. I'm not sure this experiment needs to go on any longer. If anything, he can give a quick spot start at 3B or SS, but can't play on a frequent basis as he doesn't have the arm strength. Tommy Joseph, in only his 2nd game back from a concussion induced DL stint, gets a triple and a HR. Keep in mind though, the HR came off the Harrisburg backup catcher who took the 8th inning in relief and gave up 4 hits and 4 runs in the inning. Reading takes the series 2-1 and open up a 3 game series at home against Portland.

Brevard County 11, Clearwater 5 (May 4, 2014)

Miguel Nunez - 4.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 8 ER, BB, K, 3 HR, 6 GB, 3 FB, WP
Ethan Martin - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB
Angelo Mora - 1 for 4, R, 2B, K (throwing error)
KC Serna - 1 for 4, R, K
Peter Lavin - 1 for 4, R, RBI
Harold Martinez - 0 for 4, 3 K
Art Charles - 1 for 3, R, 2 RBI, K
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 4, 2 RBI, 2 K
Brian Pointer - 0 for 2, R, BB, 2 K

I'd like to suspect a Miguel Nunez injury because I just don't understand how he could be this bad. Ethan Martin rehab sighting! He could be a welcome addition to the Phillies bullpen once fully healthy. Not much to say about this game other than Brian Pointer ultra-regression continues...and that's about it. Mother Nature doesn't even want to see Clearwater play, canceling 4 of their games this weekend. They continue with game 2 of the three game series with Brevard County tonight.

Asheville 14, Lakewood 3 (May 2, 2014)

Mark Leiter - 0.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, BB, K
Julio Reyes - 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K
JP Crawford - 1 for 4
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 3, BB, CS (outfield assist, home)
Dylan Cozens - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B (throwing error)
Willians Astudillo - 2 for 4, RBI, K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4 (fielding error)
Andrew Pullin - 2 for 4, 2 R, HR (fielding error)
Samuel Hiciano - 2 for 4, 2B, K
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 3, RBI, BB (missed catch error)
Deivi Grullon - 0 for 4

Something was a little off for Mark Leiter who is usually solid, but not spectacular. He doesn't make it out of the 1st inning and the bullpen gives up another 8 runs (4 earned) in 7 2/3 IP. Despite getting 11 hits on the game, Lakewood was only 3 for 6 with RISP. Pullin with his 2nd home run on the season, but collects his 4th error. Cozens continues to be an extra base-hit machine.

Lakewood 7, Asheville 4 (May 3, 2014)

Tyler Viza - 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 4 K, HR, 9 GB, 2 FB, WP (pickoff error)
Keivi Rojas - 4 IP, 1 H, 1 ER,1 R, BB, 2 K, HR, 6 GB, 3 FB
JP Crawford - 2 for 5, R, 2B
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 4, R, BB, 3 K (fielding error)
Dylan Cozens - 2 for 5, R, 3B, K
Willians Astudillo - 1 for 5, R, 3B, 3 RBI
Mitch Walding - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, RBI, CS
Samuel Hiciano - 2 for 5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 3, 2B, RBI, BB, K

Tyler Viza continues his hot start on the season. Rojas with an impressive relief effort. He had held Asheville hit/score-less through the 9th before giving up a 2-out solo home run. Samuel Hiciano hits his 2nd home run on the season and Pullin picks up another error, giving him 5 on the season. That bum Astudillo only had 1 hit in this game and lowers his average to .392.

Lakewood 14, Asheville 11 (May 4, 2014)

Alejandro Arteaga - 5.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 HR, 3 GB, 6 FB
JP Crawford - 4 for 5, 2 R, HR, BB, CS
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, K, HBP
Dylan Cozens - 3 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, BB, K
Willians Astudillo - 3 for 6, 3 R, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI
Mitch Walding - 3 for 5, R, RBI, K
Andrew Pullin - 3 for 5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI
Samuel Hiciano - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI (outfield assist, 2B)
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 5, 3 K
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 5, R, RBI, 3 K

Alejandro Arteaga continues to be pretty bad, but gets the win in this slugest of a game. Lakewood has 22 hits in this one and have scored 21 runs in this last two games. JP Crawford with his 3rd homer on the season, but also earns another failed base stealing attempt (his 5th on the season). I'm not sure if he always has the green light, but this is a growing concern. Astudillo back to batting .400 on the season (I was getting worried). Cozens continues to mash the ball and of his 31 hits this season, 13 of them are for extra bases. If he is going to succeed at the next level though, he will need to cut down on the strikeouts a take a few more walks. His walk rate this year is down from last season. Pullin and Hiciano both hit their 3rd home runs of the season. The final game of the 4 game set with Asheville concludes this morning at 11:05.
