It's Easy, Just Shut Them Out: Phillies 8 Reds 0

Kirk Irwin

Cole Hamels continued his ridiculous dominance of the Cincinnati Reds, and the Phillies snapped a six-game losing streak.

I don't see why it's so hard for the Phillies to win baseball games. Just have your pitcher give up zero or fewer runs and score a bunch off maybe the best pitcher in the National League this year.

Geez, it all seems so simple.

The "good" Phillies made a cameo appearance tonight in Cincinnati. The entire lineup decided to square up some balls, the starting pitching sparkled, and thusly, a foe was vanquished.

The Phillies beat the Reds 8-0.

And all was right with the world.

Cole Hamels continued his insane mastery of Cincinnati on Friday night...

...pitching 7.2 innings and giving up just five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts, lowering his season ERA to 3.49.

And it seemed as though everyone got into the act offensively. Jimmy Rollins went 1-for-4, but it was a solo homer, Chase Utley went 3-for-3, raising his batting average to .320 on the season, Domonic Brown went 1-for-4 with 3 RBIs and Carlos Ruiz had two hits out of the two-hole.

The Phils did this damage against one of the best pitchers in the National League, Johnny Cueto, who lasted just five innings and gave up four runs on six hits, raising his ERA to 1.97. That's right, the dude gave up four runs in five innings and kept his ERA under 2.

(Hey, NL Central teams. If the Phillies make Cole Hamels available, you might wanna think about giving up a Top 100 for him because he seriously cannot lose to Cincinnati. That is just some friendly advice from your neighbors to the east.)

But seriously Phils, don't trade Cole Hamels unless you get a Top 50 for him. Kthxbye.

With the win, the Phillies ended a season-high six-game losing streak and pulled to nine games under .500 (25-34).

There will be music in the clubhouse, and the villagers will rejoice.
