Phillies Minor League Roundup - July 11-13, 2014

THE FUTURE - Hannah Foslien

Today's Probables: REA: Adam Loewen, CLR: Cliff Lee, WIL: David Whitehead

Louisville 7, Lehigh Valley 3 (July 11, 2014)

Brad Lincoln - 3.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 5 GB, 0 FB
Phillippe Aumont - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K
Cesar Jimenez - 0.1 IP, 0 H, BB, K
BJ Rosenberg - 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K
Tyler Henson - 1 for 3, R, 2 BB, K
Maikel Franco - 0 for 4, R, BB, K
Darin Ruf - 1 for 4, RBI
Leandro Castro - 0 for 3, RBI, BB
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 4

Brad Lincoln didn't fare too well. He gave up far too many hits, but his K/9 and GB/FB were very good once again. Aumont teases us with these scoreless outings. The offense didn't muster up much. They left 9 on base and were 1 for 7 with RISP.

Louisville 7, Lehigh Valley 4 (July 12, 2014)

Greg Smith - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 K, 6 GB, 5 FB
Cesar Jimenez - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Tyler Knigge - 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB
Hector Neris - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K, WP
Leandro Castro - 3 for 5, 2 R (fielding error)
Tyler Henson - 2 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Darin Ruf - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Cam Perkins - 0 for 3, BB, K

Two straight very good games for Smith who hasn't walked a batter in that same span. He left the game with a no-decision. Knigge has been getting roughed up of late and seen his opponents batting average skyrocket in his last 3 outings. Tyler Henson hit his 6th home run.

Lehigh Valley 5, Louisville 2 (July 13, 2013)

Jeremy Horst - 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K
Ethan Martin - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R
Hector Neris - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R
Luis Garcia - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Leandro Castro - 3 for 5, 3 R, 2B (outfield assist, 1B)
Tyler Henson - 4 for 4, 2B, RBI, BB
Darin Ruf - 1 for 3, 2 RBI, BB, K
Cam Perkins - 0 for 2
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 3, R, BB

Horst begins a bullpen game and was in line for the loss when he exited. Neris who has been all sorts of awful lately, has now 3 scoreless innings in a row and got his 3rd win of the season. Garcia closed it down for his 16th save. Leandro Castro is 6 for 10 in his last two games to bring his average to .271. Franco has missed the last couple games to participate in the Future's game along with JP Crawford.

Reading 5, New Britain 3 (July 11, 2014)

Severino Gonzalez - 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 3 K, HR, 4 GB, 9 FB
Colton Murray - 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
Carlos Alonso - 4 for 5, 2 R, RBI, K
KC Serna - 2 for 5
Kelly Dugan - 2 for 4, R, 2 RBI
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 5, R, RBI, 3 K
Peter Lavin - 0 for 4, RBI

Certainly not your typical Severino start with the high fly balls, but he gets his 6th win. The offense combines for 13 hits and one walk to crush the Rock Cats pitching. Kelly Dugan keeps hitting, but doesn't seem to be hitting for power. You have to wonder if that is still injury related. The strikeout rate for Dugan is also a bit high.

New Britain 6, Reading 5 (July 12, 2014)

Hoby Milner - 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 5 K, HR, 3 GB, 6 FB
Kyle Simon - 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER
Matt Hoffman - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
Carlos Alonso - 0 for 3, R, 2 BB
Kelly Dugan - 2 for 5, R, 2 K
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 3, RBI, K, HBP
KC Serna - 1 for 4, R
Peter Lavin - 1 for 4, R, 2 K

I guess you could consider this a good start for Hoby because his two starts previous to this weren't very good. Kyle Simon actually takes the loss. Reading outhits New Britain 11-10.

Reading 6, New Britain 4 (July 13, 2014)

Ryan O'Sullivan - 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 10 GB, 4 FB
Perci Garner - 0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB
Mike Nesseth - 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K
Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 3, 2 BB, SB
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 5, 2B, 2 K
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4, HR, K
KC Serna - 1 for 5, R, K
Brock Stassi - 3 for 4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI

Ryan O'Sullivan pitches a phenomenal game and his best as a starter this season (3 starts total so far now). He is doing the key things starting pitchers should be capable of; not walking batters. Perci Garner has walked 41 batters in his last 36.1 IP. That is not a typo. MAG has made the transition to AA fairly easily, only giving up 1 ER in 7 IP, while walking 3 and striking out 12. After my gloomy outlook on MAG, he could reach AAA fairly soon and sniff the Phillies lineup by September. Altherr and Stassi both hit their 7th homers in this game.

Palm Beach 3, Clearwater 2 (July 11, 2014)

Kevin Walter - 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 3 GB, 6 FB
Lino Martinez - 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, HR
Cody Forsythe - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, 2 K
JP Crawford - 1 for 4, HR
Art Charles - 0 for 4, 3 K
Harold Martinez - 1 for 4, HR, 3 K
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 4, 2 K

Lino Martinez comes on in relief for Kevin Walter and gives up the go-ahead run in the 7th and takes the loss. Cody Forsythe likely needs to be challenged further and move up to Reading. Roman is now 0 for 7 in his last two games. JP hits his 4th HR with the Threshers and 7th overall this season. It is good to see this developing power. Harold Martinez doing all he can do to keep his job at this point.

Palm Beach 8, Clearwater 2 (July 12, 2014)

Mark Leiter - 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR, 4 GB, 8 FB, 2 WP
Jeb Stefan - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 2 K
Ramon Oviedo - 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 4 K
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, K
Harold Martinez - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 3, K

After two quality starts to begin his Clearwater campaign, Leiter runs into a speed bump and has a very poor outing. The offense and bullpen did him no favors either. Roman Quinn is now 0 for 11 in his last 3 games. Harold Martinez with yet another HR, his 5th and second is as many games.

Palm Beach 3, Clearwater 1 (July 13, 2014)

Aaron Nola - 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 HR, 3 GB, 7 FB
Jordan Guth - 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, K
Lee Ridenhour - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, 2 K
Art Charles - 3 for 3, R, 2B
Harold Martinez - 0 for 3

Another dud of a game from the offense, who only get 3 hits all game and walk once. Aaron Nola gives up a solo and 2-run homer in the game, but pitched solidly otherwise.

Delmarva 9, Lakewood 8 (July 11, 2014)

Yacksel Rios - 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 5 GB, 2 FB
Will Morris - 1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, BB, 2 K, HR
Julio Reyes - 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Carlos Tocci - 4 for 6, 2 R, 2B, RBI, 2 SB
Andrew Pullin - 3 for 5, R, RBI, BB
Andrew Knapp - 2 for 5, R, BB, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 3, R, BB, 2 K
Zach Green - 2 for 5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, K
Willians Astudillo - 1 for 5, 2B, RBI
Mitch Walding - 2 for 5, R, 2 2B, RBI, K, SB
Samuel Hiciano - 1 for 4, BB, 2 K
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 5

Will Morris loses the game by giving up 2 and 4 runs in the 6th and 7th innings, respectively. Yacksel Rios has himself a nice game and his last 3 overall have been solid. The offense explodes and outhits the Shorebirds 16-12. The Blue Claws collect 6 extra base hits. Tocci steals bases 5 and 6 and Walding picks up his first. Blue Claws were 6 for 25 with RISP this game leaving 13 on base.

Delmarva 9, Lakewood 2 (July 12, 2014)

Ranfi Casimiro - 4.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 4 GB, 1 FB
Scott Harris - 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, K
Aaron Baker - 2.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 4 K
Carlos Tocci - 3 for 4, 2 2B, RBI, K
Andrew Pullin - 0 for 4, RBI
Andrew Knapp - 0 for 4, 3 K
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 2
Zach Green - 0 for 4
Larry Greene - 0 for 2, 2 BB, K
Mitch Walding - 2 for 4, K
Jose Maygora - 1 for 3, R, BB
Emmanuel Serra - 1 for 4, R, 3 K

Ranfi has just not been very good in his last 10 starts, giving up 29 ER, 32 walks and 52 hits in 48.1 innings. The offense wasn't as opportunistic this time around, going 1 for 9 with RISP and leaving 8 on base. Carlos Tocci has 7 extra base hits in his last 9 games.

Delmarva 10, Lakewood 4 (July 13, 2014)

Tyler Viza - 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 7 GB, 3 FB
Joey Denato - 2 IP 3 H, 0 R, K
Matt Hockenberry - 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB
Julio Reyes - 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 4, R, K
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 4, R, 2B, K
Andrew Knapp - 0 for 2, 2 BB
Zach Green - 0 for 3, RBI
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 3, R, RBI, K
Willians Astudillo - 1 for 4
Samuel Hiciano - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
Larry Greene - 0 for 3, RBI, K
Malquin Canelo - 0 for 3 (fielding error)

After two quality starts, Tyler reverts back to his previous collection of appearances. Matt Hockenberry had a 9 inning scoreless streak until last night. Larry Greene is batting a robust .200/.275/.286 in his last 10 games.

Vermont 14, Williamsport 2 (July 11, 2014)

Chris Oliver - 1.2 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, K, HR
Preston Packrall - 1.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, K (throwing error)
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 4
Chase Harris - 1 for 4, K
Aaron Brown - 0 for 3, BB (fielding error)
Derek Campbell - 0 for 4, K
Rhys Hoskins - 1 for 4
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 4, R, 2 K (fielding error)
Sean McHugh - 0 for 3
Robinson Torres - 1 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI

Costly errors from Brown and Hernandez, coupled with Packrall allowing some inherited runners to score make for a disastrous outing for 2014 draftee Oliver. Packrall would also rack himself up some runs in his short appearance. The rest of the bullpen (Martinez, Bielski, Rojas, O'Hare, Meadors) would combine for 5.2 IP of 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walk 6 strikeout baseball. The Crosscutter offense is outhit 12-6.

Tri-City 9, Williamsport 5 (July 12, 2014)

Alejandro Arteaga - 3 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 K, HR, 3 GB, 1 FB
Bryan Sova - 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, K, 3 GB, 1 FB
Jesen Therrien - 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 2 K (pickoff error)
Keivi Rojas - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 5, 3 K
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 4, 3 K (outfield assist, 2B)
Aaron Brown - 1 for 4, HR
Derek Campbell -1 for 4, R, K
Matt Shortall - 2 for 4, R, K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 4, K
Drew Stankiewicz - 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Emmanuel Marrero - 1 for 4, R, 2B, 2 RBI

Arteaga could be bad at pitching, I'm not sure. For the 2nd game, the offense doesn't get very many hits (6 hits). Derek Campbell has slowed down a bit and only has 2 hits in his last 12 at bats. Aaron Brown crushes his 2nd professional homer.

Williamsport 5, Tri-City 0 (July 13, 2014, 5 innings, completed early due to rain)

Matt Imhof - 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K, 7 GB, 2 FB, WP
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 2, K
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 1, BB, K, CS (outfield assist, home)
Aaron Brown - 1 for 1, 2 R, HR, HBP
Matt Shortall - 0 for 1, BB
Wilmer Oberto - 0 for 2, 2 K
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 1, R, BB
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 2, R, RBI
Drew Stankiewicz - 1 for 2, HR, 3 RBI
Emmanuel Marrero - 0 for 2

Matt Imhof pitches a gem and has only giving up 1 earned run in his first 12 professional innings (3 starts). Aaron Brown with another homer and his 2nd in as many days. I wonder how soon he joins in the top CF prospect conversation with Tocci, Quinn and Altherr.

GCL Phillies 11, GCL Pirates 2 (July 12, 2014)
