Phillies Minor League Roundup - July 14, 2014

Because there are no pictures of Jack Bauer in the SBN Database. - Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Today's Probables: LWD: Yoel Mecias

New Britain 3, Reading 2

Adam Loewen - 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 5 GB, 4 FB (throwing error)
Seth Rosin - 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K, 2 GB, 2 FB
Peter Lavin - 0 for 3, RBI, K
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, K
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, R, 2 K
KC Serna - 0 for 3, 3 K (fielding error)
Zach Collier - 1 for 2, R, 3B, RBI, BB

Adam Loewen was cruising through this game until the 5th inning. A Serna fielding error allowed the eventual go-ahead run to score. Seth Rosin has been outstanding since returning to Reading, but in all honesty he should be as a 25 year old in AA. He was all sorts of awful this year between the majors (Texas) and Lehigh Valley. The offense only manages 4 hits in the loss, only ever putting 1 runner in scoring position all game.

Palm Beach 12, Clearwater 2

Cliff Lee - 4.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 3 ER, BB, 2 K, HR, 7 GB, 4 FB
Ethan Stewart - 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 3 GB, 2 FB
Ulises Joaquin - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, HR
Roman Quinn - 0 for 4, 2 K (fielding error)
JP Crawford - 3 for 3, R, BB (fielding error)
Brian Pointer - 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Wil Nieves - 0 for 2
Art Charles - 0 for 4, 3 K
Harold Martinez - 0 for 3, HBP

Cliff Lee doesn't make a great impression in another High-A start and will likely retire from deep shame. There are no such things as 35 year old prospects and the Phillies would best cut their ties now. There are better pitchers in this organization like Jason Marquis that deserve their shot. I mean, their stats this year don't even lie. ****

Anyway, Ethan Stewart shows he still isn't very good at this pitching thing. Ulises Joaquin makes his Lakewood debut by giving up a run. Roman Quinn is in a 0 for 19 slump with 7 strikeouts. JP Crawford is the ray of hope for all mankind. And speaking of rays of hope, that Brian Pointer kid has 4 HR in his past 10 games and is batting .286/.324/.743 in that same span.

Tri-City 4, Williamsport 0

David Whitehead - 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 7 GB, 6 FB
Feliberto Sanchez - 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, K, WP
Frank Rivas - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, K
Chase Harris - 1 for 4
Jiandido Tromp - 0 for 4, K
Aaron Brown - 0 for 4, 2 K (outfield assist, home)
Derek Campbell - 0 for 3, 2 K
Rhys Hoskins - 0 for 3, K
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 3, 2 K
Deivi Grullon - 2 for 3 (throwing error and passed ball)
Drew Stankiewicz - 0 for 3
Emmanuel Marrero - 1 for 3, 2B

David Whitehead gets little support from his offense in this one. The Crosscutters only get 4 hits, no walks and are only able to get 1 runner in scoring position (a double no less) all game. Tromp and Campbell have both cooled off and Sandberg hasn't been in the lineup consistently. Aaron Brown picks up another outfield assist. 21 year old Marrero, a 2014 7th rounder out of Alabama State has been consistently hitting the ball all season. Through 78 at bats he is hitting .295/.382/.372. Noted that there is very little power, but good to see he is hitting and taking bases.

GCL Phillies 3, GCL Tigers 2

Luis Morales - 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 K, HR, 6 GB, 2 FB
Alexis Rivero - 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R
Edubray Ramos - 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, WP
Olvy Marte - 2 for 4, R, K, SB
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 3, 2 RBI
Clete Thomas - 1 for 2, BB, K
Tommy Joseph - 1 for 4, 2 K
Damek Tomscha - 0 for 3, BB
Jose Pujols - 0 for 4, 2 K
Trey Williams - 1 for 4, R, K
Luis Encarnacion - 0 for 4, 2 K
Jake Sweaney - 0 for 2, R
Carlos Duran - 1 for 2, RBI, SB

GCL Phillies are outhit 10-7, but survive for the win. Luis Morales' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde approached continued. Dr. Jekyll came out and delivered a heck of a game. The tall 21 year old from Venezuela will need more starts like this  to garner some more attention. Olvy Marte has stolen 4 bases in his last 5 games. This lineup is sorely missing Grenny Cumana, who unknowingly seems to be the catalyst of the lineup. Tommy Joseph has been sharp at the plate in his rehab, hitting 4 for 13 with a walk and double.
