Great Rolen article nearly 20 years later

Great article from Jayson Stark (April '97) when he was still the primary baseball writer for the Inquirer about Rolen and what his arrival to Philly meant. Two of my favorite lines from the excerpts from the article:

Paul Owen quote:

``I've seen hundreds of players go through over the years,'' Phillies legend Paul Owens said, ``and this guy's in the top two or three. There's never been any doubt in my mind. Hell, there's never been any doubt in anybody else's mind - whether they've seen him for three years or they just saw him for the first time. If he doesn't make it, we'd all better go into another vocation.''

Prescient quote:

"What could really make this man a special star in this town is his firm character, his classy demeanor, his one-of-us personality. Even for Philadelphia, he is going to be a hard guy to dislike.

In Philadelphia, we devour our stars. Heck, we devour almost everyone. But certain people survive. The Jim Eisenreichs. The Dale Murphys. The men who are great humans as well as great players."
