Who The Phillies Can Trade For

I know some people want the Phillies to trade for overpriced players in hopes that the other team will give some prospects for the Phillies to take them. That’s been discussed elsewhere and there’s a Fanpost about that. I’m including players that could be part of the next winner.

Rockies

Carlos Gonzalez may be available and he’s only 30. But he’s had some extreme home/road splits, as many Rockies do. Once his stats park are adjusted, he gets a much lower WAR than those stats suggest.

Diamondbacks

They have a crowded outfield and might be interested in trading an outfielder. Yasmany Tomás hasn’t hit and is a terrible fielder, but the Diamondbacks are committed to him.

Ender Inciarte has had a great year and some are still bitter about the Phillies letting him go. He’s more a defense/speed guy a la Roman Quinn or Odubel Herrera and isn’t the guy you’re looking for if you want power.

David Peralta does have power, just turned 28, and is inexpensive.

A.J. Pollock is 4th among NL position players in WAR. He’d be the real prize, but I doubt the Diamondbacks would deal him.

Padres

I’m sure the Padres will make Matt Kemp available, but he’ll be 31 and has 2.0 total WAR in the last 3 seasons combined.

The Padres might trade Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross. Cashner is coming off a poor season and is a year away from free agency. Ross is coming off a good year and is two years from free agency.

Athletics

Josh Reddick will only be 29, certainly young enough to be part of a future Phillies championship team. He has 5 years of service time, so is a year from free agency. If the Phillies think they could sign him to an extension he’d be a good get. If they don’t, they could still give him a qualifying offer.

Astros

They have Preston Tucker, Jake Marisnick, Carlos Gomez, George Springer, and Colby Rasmus. They could let Rasmus leave via free agency and use Marisnick as a 4th outfielder.

Rays

They’re not trading Chris Archer, but the Rays always seem willing to trade starting pitching. Alex Cobb was a really good pitcher before he had Tommy John this year. I don’t know what his prognosis is but if he’s healthy he might be a good target. Jake Odorizzi and Erasmo Ramírez had good years and Drew Smyly was very good when healthy. Matt Moore has had a tough comeback from his injuries but he had a 1.31 ERA in his final three starts. Tampa has Blake Snell knocking on the door, so they should be willing to deal pitching.

Indians

Reportedly the Indians were looking to deal a starting pitcher. Corey Kluber won’t be available, but Danny Salazar, Trevor Bauer, Cody Anderson, and Carlos Carrasco might be. Bauer has struggled a bit but has great stuff. Anderson, on the other hand, looks like a mirage. His FIP is over a run higher than his ERA. Salazar and Carrasco would be the best gets here. Could the Phillies have a reunion with Carrasco?
