Up Close on Baseball’s Borders

Fans may not list which team they favor on the census, but millions of them do make their preferences public on Facebook. Using aggregated data provided by the company, we were able to create an unprecedented look at the geography of baseball fandom, going down not only to the county level, as Facebook did in a nationwide map it released a few weeks ago, but also to ZIP codes.

Torturing Statistics.

It seems like a mistake to think that Lee's comically high BABIP is an indicator of his decline rather than bad luck, especially with such a small sample size. It's true Lee's LD rate is a little bit high (note this is true also for Wainwright who the author commends for having a very low BABIP) , but his basic peripherals are good.

For Baseball-Loving Numismatists

The U.S. Mint is making a National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin with one side featuring a baseball and the other featuring a glove. The cool feature is that the coin is curved so that it looks like the ball is 3D and the glove has a pocket. A little pricey, but maybe a good gift for someone (or yourself).

Freddy Galvis could soon be out of hospital

Couple notes here, but the big one is that Galvis could be out of the hospital "As soon as Monday". Still no timetable on his return, of course, but it's great to hear he's recovering well.

Iron Pigs will wear Bacon (Logo) Hats

I'd love it so much more if somehow it had actual bacon on it, but I definitely will be buying one of these hats

Phils still in running for Burnett as of 2/10/14 10PM

Phils still in running as of tonight per Zolecki, against what Salisbury said Friday. IMO this is a game-changer if it happens (though not "likely" yet).

2014 Projections from Clay Davenport

Clay Davenport (who I hadn't heard of, to be honest, but is the co-founder of Baseball Prospectus), released his 2014 projections last week. He has the Phils at a pitiful 70-92 record. A couple of things jump out about his projections: Position players' WARP totals 16, which is reasonable, except that it includes Cesar Hernandez at minus 3.1. I have to think there must be an error somewhere. Pitchers WARP totals 18, for a total of 34 for all players, but 34+48 (replacement) would be 82 wins, not 72, so he must be assuming a different replacement level than what Fangraphs and Baseball Reference use.

Bobby Abreu

Bobby Abreu reportedly heading back to Philly. Thoughts?
