Phuture Phillies Bingo!! UPDATE: Moyer added

Editor's Note: Post-Moyer Bingo Card Update! Original piece posted July 2005.

July is often a month of great upheaval for Phillies fans. In their annual pursuit of a postseason berth, the Fightins of the past few seasons have pulled out all the stops to acquire all manner of "name" middle relievers, average starters, and fringe position players with "intangibles" in an attempt to get over the hump.

But why should GM Ed Wade have all the fun?  To liven up the usual cycle of hope ("Is Beltran coming?"), disappointment ("Damn, the Astros got him!"), and disgust ("Todd Jones?  Todd Freakin' Jones?!"), we at The Good Phight wanted to find a way for all of us to enjoy -- or at least endure -- the Phillies' big league personnel decisions over the next month and beyond.  Our answer: Bingo!

The rules are simple: when the Phillies acquire any of these players, mark them off. Five in a row, and we win!

Bingo, that is.

ENJOY!

I'll put my money
on the middle line going across

by David S. Cohen on Jul 6, 2005 2:51 PM EDT   0 recs

I lean towards
the diagonal line from Embree to Stanton. Of course, Ed helped out matters after a long, and ultimately successful, pursuit of Inning Endy Chavez.

this is my guess too
Embree will provide salary ballast for when we deal Wagner to Boston. Pierre for Bourn is so obvious I'm surprised it didn't happen yet, and Stanton can be had--plus he's needed, to fill that gaping void left by Dan Plesac after 2003.

how about
that line from Flash Gordon to Joe Randa?  Pierre's the great white whale, Borowski got DFA'd, Hammond and Gordon are the Proven Veteran Relievers, and Randa would make for a nice platoon with Bell.

I'm feeling really good about...
the line from Ayala to Herges.  You never know how mayn relief pitchers Wade can acquire and it's not unknown for him to get a pointless third catcher like Mirabelli (see Kelly Stinnett).

If I were a betting man...
and I am,  I'd go diagonally - Figgins/Barajas/Free/Borowski/Lilly.

Howard will hit well enough in Thome's absence to prove himself "worthy" of Lilly (ugh), and keeping him around will tempt too many questions about Thome.

Springer to Kline
C'mon!  Juan Pierre!  He's Moby Dick to Ed Wade's Ahab.  Throw in former closer Danny Graves and you got an Ed Wade roster.

Bingo!
Phreakin' brilliant.

thanks
Thanks batgirl, feel free to recreate with Lego men.  And congratulations on snagging Bret Boone.  I guess.

Borowski
Borowski is probably out, as he just signed with Tampa Bay, but that could make Baez available.  You know how Eddie loves previous closers!

Embree
Alan Embree -- released by the Red Sox today and easily available for Fast Eddie!

it's scary...
how many of these guys have been picked up or rumored to be targets of interest. Remember, Wade supposedly offered Howard for Ted Lilly during the 2005 season (thanks, JP!); Boone and Randa have both been mentioned as possible Nuni upgrades in the last few weeks; and Barajas was one of the names floating in the possible Lieber-to-Texas deal.

It's almost enough to make me wonder, again, if Wade's contract severance allowed him some ongoing role...

A modified Gillick one?
Since this one was made for Wade, shouldn't we have a Gillick one? It could probably be made by simply picking spare parts from the Mariners of the early '00s, Orioles of the late '90s and any rotting corpses of the Blue Jays of the late 80s early 90s.

sounds good. but stay away from...
the Alex Gonzalez/Ryan Franklin corner. The smell of decay is overpowering. Or maybe it's just the stench of failure...

Gotta include some toolsy C.J. Henry super-athlete prospect-y types, too. Speed never goes into a slump!

hey
don't bust on my man CJ, he has as much RBI then Abreu does playing with the yankees in less games and less AB. Sad but true.

RBI
Do you think they are the end-all be-all of player evaluation?

by David S. Cohen on Aug 21, 2006 10:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

it
was a joke!!!

by Philsin06 on Aug 22, 2006 6:38 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Have you noticed...
Abreu has a .500 OBP and 14 runs scored since joining the Yankees?

by phatj on Aug 21, 2006 11:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

and nunez
has 13 runs and 12 RBI. And Nunez sucks remember. I am just saying for a team to have scored 76 runs and him to only have 9 RBI. hmmm. Thats puts him on pace for 65 for the year. Not for nothing and i dont want to continue about abreu because he is gone, but Bost and Balt have some of the worse pitching. When he played vs. LAA and ChiSox, not so good. He scored in 12 games, 11 of them blowouts or losses.

Conine
In retrospect, how did we miss putting Jeff Conine on this card?
