Phillies 2006 Draft Selections

The 2006 Amateur Player Draft is about to begin in New York City. The Phils have three early picks (#18, #37, #65) and as the day goes on, I'll be updating this story with their selections and any good info I can find. Freel free to add your own thoughts and comments.

Update [2006-6-6 13:24:23 by dajafi]: Phils select P/SS Kyle Drabek, son of 1990 NL Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek, with the 18th pick in the first round. Here's Baseball America's writeup on Drabek, and an article from the Houston Chronicle.

In the supplemental round (#37), Phils select Adrian Cardenas, 2b, a high-schooler from Florida. Here's some info on Cardenas, with more here.

At #65 (second round), the Phils take RHP Andrew Carpenter, a tallish college pitcher about whom there are questions on velocity.

At #97, the pick is Jason Donald, another infielder from the University of Arizona.

For more coverage of the Phils' draft, see here.

Off-field issues for Drabek
Anyone know what BA is talking about here: "Yet some teams are backing away from Drabek. He's high-strung on the field, and there are off-field issues as well."

rumors
Steroid use, which he vehemently denies, and some other stuff. Supposedly he was (but is no longer) on meds for Attention Deficit Disorder, as well; big-time sports programs aren't always the most sympathetic or understanding about that sort of thing.

He's 18. I don't really care if he's not super-mature yet, just that his arm is sound and he's not a psychopath. Four years ago there were questions about Hamels' makeup, too--and those questions were justified, as the bar fight showed. He seems to have gotten it together, and I think it's a good bet that Drabek will, too.

Drabek
I haven't heard any of the steroids or ADD rumors, but he has been arrested for public drunkenness and was in a single car accident recently.  He's also been described as having "a strong sense of entitlement."

All that aside, I love the pick.  He's described to have th emost talent of any HS pitcher in this draft and his pedigree can't be any better with a dad who was an outstanding MLB pitcher.

The Phillies took a risk in 2002 on a HS pitcher with a pick in the late teens.  That pitcher was described to have off-field character issues as well.

That pitcher is Cole Hamels.

I misread your one sentence.
Reading too quickly, I thought you wrote, "All that aside, I love the prick."

you see what you want to see...
Though, yeah, it seems that word might be a decent description of this kid. He strikes me as the kind of guy I would have loathed in high school, with two parts contempt and one part jealousy...

Whatever: obviously I hope he just wins 200 games for us, and keeps his nose relatively clean while doing it.

BP's opinion
From Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus: "So in the end, the makeup cost Drabek right around one million dollars. If he went where his talent merits, he'd be looking at around $2.5 million, instead he's looking at $1.5. This is either one of the steals of the draft or a nightmare, with little chance for something in between."

but...
I think this is a chance you take--especially if you're paying $1 million less than you otherwise might. I'm very happy with the pick, particularly given the Phils' unusual success at getting HS pitchers to the majors.

and on the other hand...
Here's this story, at a site where (elsewhere--click the home page and look for the draft primer) I shared some thoughts about the Phils' past track record in the draft:

Very mysterious. Or maybe completely blown out of proportion. Who knows?

Very mysterious indeed
Does he kick puppies in his spare time? Boil babies and eat them for dinner? What's going on here?
