Rowand signs with Giants

Update [2007-12-12 17:1:54 by dajafi]: ESPN is reporting the deal as five years, $60 million. While that's a lot less awful than $80 million, it's still not a deal I wish the Phils had made. Bon chance, Rowand...

That's it, kids: Aaron Rowand is taking his bat, glove and grit to the west coast after getting a five-year deal from the San Francisco Giants. I'll be very interested in seeing how much money he snagged.

As I've noted earlier, I'm not sorry to see Rowand go. He did a great job in 2007 for the Phillies, but San Fran is buying high--maybe as high as $80 million, based on early rumors!--as maybe they had to do, considering they've got the worst lineup in MLB. The only thing I'm bummed about is that since the Giants wound up with the fifth-worst record in baseball, their first-round draft pick is "protected," and the Phils get their second-round selection--probably around 55th overall.

Unless they sign a Type A free agent, the Phils will have four picks in the first 75 or so (their own first-rounder in the mid-20s, a comp pick for Rowand around 35, the Giants' pick at 55 or so, and their own second-rounder at 75 or thereabouts). This represents great potential for a system-saving infusion of amateur talent, and should give Pat Gillick more confidence about trading prospects--if a good deal ever shows up for him to do so.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
Sheesh. Hope Rowand enjoys the cash because he sold any chance of ever winning another WS to get it.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
Seriously - what does it say about a guy's "intangibles" and his "knowing how to win" when he goes to the highest bidder who really has no chance whatsoever to win anything?

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
Guys stop... Rowand's grilling skills alone were worth the money.  5 years.. 60 million.  Thats a bargain for a guy with cookouts like his.  I'm sure that alone will put the Giants over the top.

I'm just glad we aren't the ones shelling out that kind of money to him.  People complain about Burrell's money... Imagine when Rowand would have a .700 OPS here in year 5 if that...

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
but you have to balance his grilling skills with the increased likelihood of getting injured playing tag...

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
This means that there is hope for me! I have regularly been complimented for having the best bbq's on my block. This means that at least a $60 million pay day is on its way soon. Apparently grilling is at a premium in the league right now, so there has to be a team willing to sign me. Plus, I am a minimal risk to run into a wall at full speed.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
His new house in San Francisco has no fences.  Its part of the contract... The Giants were scared he'd run into the fence playing wiffle ball or tag.  So that reduces those injury risks.   Now running the bases, he might try a take out slide to take one for the team so his other players can make it to a base...

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
Good God, I had no idea how good Detroits lineup is. Top to bottom, that is a pretty absurd. Not to mention that their pitching isn't half bad.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
Indeed. Even with Magglio's inevitable regression and Pudge's Dunston-esque walk rate, the fight for the AL Central is gonna be great to watch.

On a related note, it's kind of sad to see one of the NL's best (and still very young) talents go to the Junior Circuit. The gap between the leagues seems to get wider every year.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
I'm glad he went to a non-contender.  As much as the consensus is that he may not be worth the long-term contract, imagine him roaming centerfield for the Braves.  That would be damaging.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
That occurred to me earlier tonight. Was wondering if with the Braves having signed Glavine, we'd have gotten their 1st-round pick or lost it to the Mets... totally moot, of course.

What I thought would happen up until they signed Andruw was that Rowand would go to the Dodgers... and we'd lose out on their first-round pick, at #15. Instead, that's the Braves' problem. Couldn't happen to a nicer team, no? ;)

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
Keep in mind Rowand (as would all players) likely got a lot of pressure from the union to take the longest, highest dollar offer as a benefit to his brethren. I don't think you can blame him for a money-first mind-set in a vacuum.  If money were eaul, I'm sure he'd prefer Philly or NY.

Phils are going to miss Rowand
However, they were going to miss him anyway since he is a longshot to repeat his 2007 campaign.  It is ridiculous that WIP is out in full force against the Phillies on this one.  And it speaks volumes about Rowand going to San Fran where he got the most money.  Good for him, but stop talking about how much he wants to win.

He obviously doesn't mind losing if you pay him enough.

Re: Phils are going to miss Rowand
Here's Sam Donnellon's column. "Rowand's gone, with his spirit, leadership"

I would outline this column as follows:

  1. Stupid point
  2. Here are all the reasons why the stupid point is wrong
  3. Yeah, but still

I read this column, and to anyone who hasn't, I recommend saving yourself 90 seconds or whatever by just reading taco pal's summary.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
We can all debate the merits of Rowand and whether he'll duplicate last year ever again(he won't) but can anyone argue the fact that this team is weaker without him?

Obviously, we'll need to wait for the other shoe to drop and see what the team does... but this outfield minus Bourn and Rowand is simply not as good as it was last year and so far nothing has been done to bolster it. I would hope now that the Rowand question has been answered that Gillick puts the money to good use because it is THIN out in the grass at CBP.

Re: Rowand signs with Giants
No faith in Chris Snelling, huh?

I hear what you're saying, but I still believe--perhaps naively--that reinforcements are coming. It's just not that hard to find OFs who can hit a little. I have the feeling they're waiting to see if Geoff Jenkins' price drops to something like two years, $14-15m, and the rumors around Nate McClouth of Pittsburgh persist. He'd be a nice add.

McLouth I like a lot ; Geonkins not at all..
McLouth is an excellent base-stealer, plays a decent CF and had 20 points of OPS on Jenkins this season. Plus he makes $400K this year and is under control through 2009.  Jenkins is in decline, even though he is used almost exclusively against RHPs at this point.  I would like to see them sign Mike Lamb and let Dobbs be Werth's platoon partner.  Much cheaper and better than Jenkins.
