Phils close in on an OF

It seems likely that in the next couple days the Phillies will come to terms with one of two veteran outfielders: Geoff Jenkins, formerly of the Brewers, or ex-Padre Mike Cameron. The team is in discussions with both: Cameron, available now that San Diego has traded for Jim Edmonds, presumably would push Shane Victorino back to right field (and Jayson Werth to the bench) once he's finished serving a 25-game suspension to start 2008. Jenkins, who is supposedly weighing offers from the Phils and Padres, would platoon with Werth, leaving Victorino in center.

Both likely would be assets for 2008, and neither will require anything close to the five-year, $60 million deal Aaron Rowand signed with the Giants last week. Jenkins would be shifting from left field to right, and his offensive numbers are trending down as he heads into his mid-30s, but he still slugged .482 against righties in 2007. Perhaps more of a concern is that he hit a robust .289/.359/.532 in Milwaukee's Miller Park, but just .224/.282/.416 everywhere else. Jenkins might be more likely to accept a one-year deal than Cameron.

Cameron, who turns 35 next month, had the opposite trend last season: he hit .229/.316/.413 in spacious Petco Park, but .254/.341/.449 on the road. His defensive reputation remains intact, though the years and a number of injuries--most memorably a frightening collision with Carlos Beltran while both played for the Mets in 2005--have taken a toll. Cameron's best seasons came in Seattle, where he played for then-GM Pat Gillick; earlier in the offseason, he was reportedly seeking a long-term deal, but now might be willing to take a shorter contract--an obvious plus for the Phillies.

The complaint remains that the Phils need pitching, not more offense. But that's true of literally every team out there. The play at this point is just to make the best value additions possible--and right now that probably means a mid-30s outfielder with power. My inclination would be to offer both the same deal--say, a year at $7 million with a team option for another year at the same price, or a $1 million buyout--and sign whoever says yes first.

I don't know if a one-year deal is possible, but if it is that would be fantastic. I would prefer Jenkins, mainly since he won't have to miss a month of the season. A Jenkins/Werth platoon could be really good at the plate, considering their LH/RH splits -- a LOT better than a full year of Cameron.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
I have this weird feeling that we're going to do well buying low on a  "name" hitter this winter, much as we did terribly buying high on Helms after 2006.

The Cameron suspension should depress his value, but by just how much I have no sense.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
I'd rather have both, Cameron as a CF starter and then Jenkins as a RF platoon slash bench bat, but either should help the 08 team.

daj, is that name either "Nomar Garciaparra" or "Scott Rolen"? If so, tell us now!!!

Re: Phils close in on an OF
No, I was referring to Jenkins or Cameron.

Getting both only makes sense if you can flip Victorino for a top pitcher, and/or you can convince your pals in the f/o to raise the payroll over their moronic and arbitrary $105 million "ceiling."

Too bad we didn't win the division, draw three million fans, or get playoff revenue... oh, wait. We did.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
How's the ceiling calculated anyway? If it's based on projected revenues or something like that, I'm not going to complain too much - that's how every business sets its budget, after all. If it's based solely on what everyone else is spending, that's problematic.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
I think Giles recently said that it was half of revenues. I just don't see how that can be, though, since revenues almost had to be way up last year. Maybe they're a year behind and the budget will jump for 2009... it just increasingly seems to me that they're behind the curve in terms of MLB economics.

There haven't been any specific examples this winter for me where they should have spent more, so it's more an abstract concern than something I can point to right now.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
At this point, what would raising the "ceiling" get for us?  There just isn't much pitching talent out there, and spending another $24M for three years of Adam Eaton talent is not what I want.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
Whatever happens. I truely believe that what is best for the Phillies is to place Victorino in CF not RF and to leave him there so he can grow and thrive.

Having him get comfortable is more important long term. Each year you can go looking for Corner Outfielders much more easily.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
I agree - I want Victorino in CF regardless of who else is acquired.  I think he can be a real asset there for a while.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
Me too. Among other considerations, Shane's bat plays so much better in CF than in an outfield corner.

The rumor is that the Phils made a three-year offer to Jenkins. I really, really hope that isn't true; I just don't want the guy for that long, unless it's for something like $15 million--cheap enough that he's eminently tradable if need be.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
yeah, three years is pretty scary for a guy whose top age comps are Cliff Floyd and--hey, deja vu!--Danny Tartabull.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
Truth is, I would have loved to sign Floyd as Werth's platoon partner. Why so many of these guys choose Tampa, I have no idea...  lousy (if improving) team, lame town, worst stadium in the bigs.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
Cliff Floyd ain't so bad. I don't remember Tartabull too well.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
in '97 the Phillies signed 34-year-old Tartabull as a free agent; a couple games into the season he hit a foul off his foot and retired from baseball.

career line in Philadelphia: 7 AB, 0 H, 4 BB, 4 SO, .000/.364/.000

Re: Phils close in on an OF
re: Floyd; overall he's obviously not bad. but post-age 32 he's been frequently injured, ineffective, and occasionally both.

he's not a bad guy on a one-year deal, but you don't offer a long-term contract to a guy like that.

Re: Phils close in on an OF
Neither of these guys get me too excited. Jenkins would work but I think I'd prefer it if Cameron took his 160 strike outs somewhere else.

Let's get this party started!

160 strikeouts?  What's the big deal about that?
