Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies

Milwaukee television station TMJ4 (ow, my jaw!) is reporting that Geoff Jenkins has agreed to a 2 year deal with the Phillies expected to be worth approximately $13 million. Pat Gillick evidently noted the roster's lack of a Geoff and acted accordingly.

Jenkins will almost certainly be the lefty-hitting half of a right-field platoon with Jayson Werth.  $6.5 million a season for a platoon guy is a lot, but I think it's better than some of the alternatives.  Sometimes you gotta pay to play.  With Victorino in center, this team's outfield will probably come close to matching the offensive output of the 2007 Phillies outfield, with little if any defensive dropoff.  I prefer Victorino in center field anyway... you maximize his abilities there.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
ESPN was reporting some type of vesting option for 2010 that could make the total contract worth $20M

Meh.Who plays CF when Victorino goes down or sits?
I would have by far preferred signing Cameron, or trading for a guy like Nate McLouth.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
The is better than Cameron for the sheer reason that we have an option if he fails.  If you bring Cameron in, he is a full time starter and one the Phils would stick with through bad times.  If Jenkins fails, you have other options that are easier to get to.

On the surface, Jenkins is a bad move since his play has been falling off a cliff.  His ISO did jump up nicely last year to over .200, so, I am hoping he has steadied the ship.  I find it strange that Jenkins agreed to the 3rd vesting year.  You would figure that the CBP will inflate his numbers and he could be inline for one more contract and there is probably a significant difference between age 35 and age 36, at least in terms of GMs.

Let's just hope his numbers weren't good due to performance enhancers.  Not that I have a problem with it, but because he has appeared to stop them.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
hard to complain about this. the price is very reasonable for a vet and this makes our starting outfield very solid; the whole "OMG so many strikeouts" argument is pretty pointless IMO. the only real problem I can see is that the vesting option could hurt us if/when Werth goes down with an injury.

concern about a backup CF is fair, but I think very much a secondary issue.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
I like this move . . . as long as Jenkins is healthy and they stick to a true platoon.  If they do, it'll be a really valuable addition to the team.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Exactly.... plus I really like the idea of having a Jenkins to come off the bench late in the game as opposed to Bruntlett or Nunez types.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
One advantage to platoons is the added benefit during interleague and, um..., World Series games.  Most bench players are close to replacement level except platoon players.  Now, Jenkins is close to replacement level versus lefties, but still would likely provide a better force when we implement the DH than most other bench players.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Since it's only for two years, I'm ok with it.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Based entirely upon personal observation, I feel like Victorino has more range to his right than Rowand does, which will do a lot to make up for the plodding of Pat Burrell in left.

Do we know anything about Jenkins' defense as a right fielder?  He's supposed to be quite a good left fielder.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
My understanding is he has a pretty good arm.. Not sure on his range though

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Given the total landscape of needs and resources, I think this was a strong signing. The lineup and the bench are stronger, Jenkins has a good defensive rep, it didn't bust the budget and we didn't surrender players or (I'm pretty sure) draft picks.

I agree with Pete that the OF should be about as good as it was last year. Still not sure Victorino has shown us everything he's capable of, and assuming Burrell holds steady and Werth/Jenkins do what they usually do, the corners are solid.

A third baseman would be nice, but if you assume that Chad Durbin will be either the #5 or (my strong preference) the long man in the bullpen, all that's left to get is one more pitcher. Easier written than done, of course.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
I don't believe Jenkins was a type A (or B for that matter) so we should be in the clear on the draft picks

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Thanks. That was my recollection--as was the fact that the Brew Crew declined a $9m option on him--so I figured we were okay. But I worried about it in the same way I feared that they'd forget to call Rowand to officially tender an arb offer.

You can't offer arbitration to a player who's option you declined.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Cots has the contract up.  Limited NTC (6 teams)... 925 PA's over two years or 525 in 09' for the option to vest @ 7.5M.... Nothing on Durbin yet.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Solid move, basically paying half of Burrell's 08 contract to get half of his production in half the playing time, no? If JWerth can keep up his half of the deal, then there should be hardly any dropoff from Rowand, even in the all-important WHITE category!

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
Doesn't that make Burrell twice as valuable as Jenkins?

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
The Defense will be better than last year with Victorino in CF... None other than Andruw Jones said he thought that Victorino was the best CF in the National League in and interview last August.

The PMR Range factor projected that Victorino would have made over 30 more catches than Rowand. Both Jenkins and Werth especially have great range factors in right. Better than Rowand had in CF.

Durbin Signed for 900,000  a fair price.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
This is one where just watching the games makes it completely obvious.  Is there anyone who watched Rowand and Victorino play the outfield last year who didn't think that Victorino was in a completely different league as a fielder than Rowand?

Todd Zolecki's blog has a link to a pretty funny YouTube clip with Jenkins and another longtime Wisconsin sports star.

Re: Geoff Jenkins will join the Phillies
I like this move. Jenkins is a good, solid fielder, can hit 20-30 homers and drive in 80. He strikes out 100+ times.
