RIP Dave Snyder
Update [2007-2-15 17:51:8 by dajafi]: Dave's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Neland Ave. CRC for Scholarships for Christian Education. Those interested in contributing can contact phillychuck at cc06@lehigh.edu for more information.
All of us at The Good Phight, and Phillies phans all over the world, are deeply saddened tonight at the loss of our friend Dave Snyder, who died today in a one-car accident near his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was 50 years old. His wife, Marlyce, was in the car with him and injured in the crash, and is in fair condition at a nearby hospital.
Dave was the creator and proprietor of Philliesphans.com, the site where we at TGP first met a few years ago. He was also the founder and president of MVP Software, which he founded in 1985. Dave took his philliesphans handle, mvpsoft, from the company.
He was an extraordinary man of many interests and talents, funny, acerbic, principled, passionate for the Phillies and, to a lesser extent, the other Philadelphia teams, devoted to his family and his church, very committed to his community. He was also a man of very strong views, and just about all of us argued with him at one time or another on topics from baseball to politics to religion to how he ran his website.
But the arguments had the quality of family squabbles, because the site Dave built was so good, so compelling, that he and so many of the other regulars on it came to feel, for me at least, really like family. Dave ran philliesphans on an entirely voluntary basis, paying for the site out of his own pocket; his perspective was that the visitors were his guests. And it was, most of the time, a great place to be; several of us made literally thousands of posts there.
For building and maintaining that site, creating a space where diverse people with one somewhat goofy common interest could get to know each other and experience one of life's great joys and tribulations--baseball fandom--together, we'll always be grateful. And for pushing so many of us to think more vigorously, to accept and embrace our responsibilities to each other and to the world, we'll always admire him, and miss him.
I'm not yet aware of any information about sending condolences or otherwise honoring Dave Snyder. When we hear anything, we'll post it here.
Rest in peace, Dave.

Re: RIP Dave Snyder
What a strange world this has become. I think many of us bumped head-on into the strangeness on Saturday, when a guy who most look to as the founder of the on-line phillies fan community, Dave Snyder (aka mvpsoft), was killed in a random, tragic car accident near his home. I mean, how do I tell my wife that a guy I've met in person only once, for about 10 minutes at a Phillies' game, has passed on, and it feels like I've lost my own brother.
Actually, I know Dave Snyder better than I know many members of my own family. I can tell you his opinion on a hundred issues: he loved Bobby Abreu with a passion; he believed in power, patience, and pitching; he hated abortion and George W. Bush with about equal fervor; and on and on. But, what really makes this seem more intimate, is that I can attest to the personal character and decency of a man who lived his life a thousand miles away from me.
Dave was ready to confront whatever opposition he encountered in order to defend the weak, the innocent, or the downtrodden. He had the strength and stubbornness needed to stand out front and take whatever abuse was proffered in order to see a cause through, regardless of how rough the path to the finish became.
In 2002 MLB ceded the rights to major league websites to MLBAM, and phillies.com simply vanished one day. The new phillies web site and forum was botched up beyond belief. I few of us emailed each other, and Dave stepped up to the plate. He volunteered to host a new message board (financed out of his own pocket), but he also wanted more. "This could be a great opportunity," he said. "We could create a site without all the name-calling, with intelligent, reasoned debate, a place where all fans would feel welcome. It could be the best baseball talk anywhere online."
Grand ambitions, I admit (and we took a lot of abuse publicizing them and trying to live up to them), but there were many, many times I think his site achieved and even surpassed what we hoped for in those early days. Philliesphans.com accumulated more than 1,000,000 posts in less than 5 years, was referenced in major newspapers and online articles, was the source of some really famous false trade rumors (and a few true ones), and Dave himself was quoted in a national article about MLB's apparent attempt to shut down fan sites like his. Our posts and FAQ's have been quoted at numerous online sites including some of the best known sabermetric sites on the web. At one time we had at least 30 posters with phillies.com email addresses lurking and posting regularly.
Dave Snyder changed my life for the better with philliesphans.com, and I'm sure many, many around here feel the same way. I think he'd want us all to pause to contemplate the value of true friendship, even if it's established over the web, nurtured through (respectful) disagreement, and centered around a truly incomprehensible passion for the losingest team in the history of baseball. We're all friends at some level in this extended community, and, as friends, we should mourn Dave's passing together, and move forward cherishing each other's existence. Each day is a gift; no one is guaranteed tomorrow.
Rest in peace, Dave, and God be with your family,
Chuck

Re: RIP Dave Snyder
I came to philliesphans, like probably a lot of others (and I know several of my TGP compatriots here), right around the time of the Thome signing. Great as that move was, delighted as it made me, it became clear pretty quickly that the real value was in the community I'd stumbled across. For four exciting, frustrating, absolutely compelling seasons (and, maybe more important for my own sanity during periods of baseball deprivation, three off-seasons), it was by far the place I spent the most time online, and it lived up to the aspirations that Dave, you and others had for it and then some. He really brought something of great value and enjoyment into all our lives, and I'll always be grateful for that.

Re: RIP Dave Snyder
I have turned my gas price blog into a temporary place to read about the family and the progress.
I would encourage comments there; I will consider printing all comments and giving them directly to Dave's son; my friend- Chris.

Re: RIP Dave Snyder
One thing you could do for the hundreds of us who know Dave through our on-line interactions and shared passion for the Phils is to post information on the arrangements. We'd all like to send condolences to the family, and let them know our prayers are with them.

Unbelievable
What I also owe to Dave is the understanding that the internet can be a place where there is reasoned thoughtful polite discussion . . . of all kinds of issues. His view of the internet was almost diametrically opposed to much of what inhabits it. For that, we can all be appreciative.
To his family, all of us are thinking of him and owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Phils in 07 for Dave.

Re: RIP Dave Snyder
From posting with Dave and others on the old Phillies site to then moving over the pp.com which he built and nurtured with his passion, love, intelligence and tenacity and through all the ups and downs, all I can say is Dave made me a better person for knowing him and that kind of impact is what all of us hope we make with those we know and care for...RIP friend.
