Go back two weeks. The Phillies, then with a record of 72-65, had followed their four-game sweep of the Mets with a dispiriting weekend in Florida, losing two out of three to the cellar-dwelling Marlins, and sat five games out of the NL East lead, three back of Arizona for the wild card. The St. Louis Cardinals, after five months of struggle, had just reached .500 at 67-67--and sat just two games out of the division lead, closer to a playoff berth than the Phils.

Since then, the Cardinals have gone 3-11, all but dooming their chances for a second straight world championship. Scott Rolen and Chris Duncan are on the shelf, Rick Ankiel has turned into a pumpkin, and the St. Louis rotation might be as troubled as ours. Meanwhile, the Phillies themselves have continued to play bipolar ball, with the focus alternately on their wretched pitching and superb hitting. Somehow, they're 8-4 over these last two weeks, still in both division and wild-card races but in need of help from whoever's playing the Padres.

In other words, the Phillies have a lot more to play for than do the Cards. St. Louis native Ryan Howard comes home looking to wake up his recently quiet bat: the 2006 MVP is 3 for his last 23, and has hit just .179 in September thus far. For his career, Howard is a .385 hitter (10-26) at Busch Stadium; it's hard to imagine the Phillies staying hot and overtaking San Diego without a big contribution from their most dangerous slugger.

Star-divide

For the first time in recent memory, the Phillies would seem to have the pitching advantage in this series: Kyle Kendrick starts tonight after taking that line drive off his knee last week, against either Anthony Reyes (2-14, 5.76) or converted reliever Brad Thompson (6-5, 5.05). Though the Cardinals have won 10 of Thompson's 14 starts, the right-hander has allowed 21 home runs while striking out just 47 in 114 innings. Tuesday, Cole Hamels is scheduled to return in a matchup against one-time Phillies nemesis Kip Wells. The former Pirate had won five of his six career starts versus the Phillies until a July 13 outing at OFJOAB, when the Phils knocked him out in the second inning en route to a 13-3 win. Though Hamels is unlikely to exceed 70-75 pitches, the psychological boost of his return--and the option of switching J.D. Durbin back to the bullpen--should be helpful. St. Louis likely has the edge in Wednesday's series finale, with de facto ace Adam Wainwright facing Jamie Moyer. But with the young Wainwright approaching 200 innings, it's possible that Tony LaRussa will have his best pitcher on a short leash.

The Padres meanwhile entertain the Pirates for four games in San Diego. You can read more about that series here, but tonight's pitching matchup at least doesn't seem to bode very well for the Phils getting any help.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
I don't think LaRussa believes in short leashes for his pitchers, unfortunately for us (and unfortunately for Wainwright).

But I'm hoping for double-digit run production in each of the first two games. It's a realistic goal for this lineup.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
I'm not going to knock Charlie for this given the circumstances, but I'm a little worried about our bullpen going forward.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
Yes, that was unclear. What I was referring to specifically is the fact that Myers, Gordon, and Romero have all pitched in three straight games. Obviously, overall quality has been a concern the whole year.

Game 1 - good so far
Folks, I don't know about you )and it's a long way to go) but if I'm a Mets fan, I'm starting to think about puking in my shoes.

Re: Game 1 - good so far
No sooner do I write that...than Condrey. Mesa.

Additionally, I was thinking as Pujols came up with the sacks juiced...why not just walk him? It's just a run and you're up by a million.

I presume everyone is watching the Eagles. Don't worry -- I'm suffering enough for everyone right now.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17-
This bullpen really is hideous.  Condrey was horrible, but Jose Mesa should not be anywhere near a game that's within 15 runs.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17-
I'm glad someone is suffering with me on this. About half way through it, I just started laughing at the absurdity of it all. They're up 12-3 at one point and in danger of losing.

On the bright side, if the bullpen is going to collectively fling dung, at least it's on a night when the offense has scored twelve runs. I think, somehow, that is the motto of the team this year.

We're out of the eighth at least. I can't wait for the ninth. At least I'm pretty sure we won't see Pujols again.

1 out... two on... Rosario pitching...  I feel safer with Mitch Williams pitching to Joe Carter....    2 outs now pray with me

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17-
I was following this on my computer the last three awful innings. Connection was too slow for mlb.tv, which is probably just as well.

Feels like it's not so much that they won, as that they didn't lose.

But I'll take it.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17-
That was sort of gut-wrenching. At least Romero, Gordon, and Myers got days off.

There was a point
When the Eagles were falling apart and the Phillies were in the midst of blowing an 11 run lead that I nearly lost my mind. I literally think I was as close as I've ever been to ending up in a straightjacket babbling about government conspiracies and foaming at the mouth.

The fact that the Phillies were able to hold on just may have saved me.

Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
Yeap and on the other side of the coin, Howard's bat seems awake, Kendrick appeared healthy, and Rosario becomes the latest in the long line (seriously, it's at least half a dozen by now, right?) of Phils to pick up a save this season.

--not even gonna say anything about how this time, the Mets may actually have broken for real--

Alfonseca (8)
Gordon (6)
Durbin (1)

Mesa (1)
Ennis (1)
Rosario (1)

Re: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
I'm not sure what team holds the record for most pitchers recording a save, but the 1962 Angels (their 2nd year as a franchise) are probably up at the top: 11 pitchers combined for 47 saves (then a record; the team also set a record for fewest complete games with a "mere" 23). no pitcher saved more than 9 games; seven pitchers finished more than 12 games but none finished more than 26.

according to the Hardball Times (http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/a-history-of-the-loogy-part-one/) this was at least partially due to Angels manager (and AL Manager of the Year) Bill Rigney's pioneering the use of the LOOGY with Jack Spring.

Hey, don't they say that winning teams win these games?  I guess that is redundant.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17-
If this team had even a slightly-better-than-average offense, their record would be worse than the Marlins.  The incredible offense fuels this team.  Imagine what it would do with a modicum of pitching?

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
According to the sister site, Kip Wells is no longer starting tonight's game. Instead we're getting Todd Wellemyer.

Tuesday's game
Hamels wasn't all that sharp tonight in his return. Stuff looked fine, command did not. Through 4.5, the Phils are trailing 3-1 despite the fact that the Cardinals have, maybe, one starter-quality hitter in their lineup: no Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen, or Duncan.

Kip Wells is pitching in relief and dominating us once again. I'm exhausted from traveling and might go to bed, hoping for the best. The Mets meanwhile have blown a 4-0 lead for the second straight night and are now trailing 9-7. I still can't really believe they'll lose a series to the Nationals, but...

Phillies at Cardinals, 9/18
and ELEVEN innings from the bullpen tonight, and the only one to give up a run was Myers...this is why you watch the games folks!

And I seriously think that JWerth brought that September 18th magic over from LA with him...

Our 1a and 1b gave up 4 runs in 5 innings while the lovely bullpen threw a 9 inning shutout.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
It was a little amusing how last night's game seemed to be sort of a giant middle finger from the baseball gods to the entire Good Phight community.  Yes, you get a dramatic September win... but the big heroes will be your nemeses Jose Mesa and Rod Barajas!

Ah well, I don't care.  I'll take the win.

Re: Luck of the Draw: Phillies at Cardinals, 9/17
And Clay Condrey. And Geoff Geary. And Flash. And Durbin. The whole bullpen, except Myers, basically.

I nearly posted the same thing last night.

What a box score, by the way. I was waiting for the team to call someone up from Ottawa when the game got to about the 12th. I figured that they could fly someone in before the game would have ended.

I've been reading the Amazin Avenue site over the last few days. The number of sentences in which "Willie Randolph" and "Gene Mauch" both make appearances has to be at an all-time high for a Mets site. I didn't know Mets fans even knew who Gene Mauch was.

Tonight's game will be a tough one
Adam Wainwright is no joke. Gramps better pitch like he's 39 again.

Re: Tonight's game will be a tough one
He's had quality starts in 8 of his last 9 outings, with the one exception being a game where he was lifted after 5.2 IP, one earned run allowed.

FWIW, probably not very much, he's been worse at Busch Stadium than on the road: 7-8, 3.86, 9 HR in 100.1 IP compared to 6-3, 3.53, 3 HR in 81.2 IP everywhere else.

more free baseball
At the end of 9 in the finale, it's tied 1-1.

Tough to blame the Phillies for not winning it in regulation: Moyer was very strong through six, Romero, Gordon and Geary have each pitched a scoreless inning (Geary getting out of major trouble in the 9th), and the Phils were foiled with two men on in each of the 8th and 9th by strong defensive plays from David Eckstein and Scott Spezio, respectively.

The Mets already have won and the Padres are ahead yet again, so the club has to win to maintain ground.

These guys continue to fight like hell, however this comes out in the end.

Tough
Ugh...should have lost before Geary weasled his way out of a jam, Myers ends up being the fall guy. Two nights in a row he has failed to get it done.

We had a few good chances to tack on some runs in the last 2 innings...

Re: Tough
Myers should have gotten through that inning, but it was a tough loss.  Infield single, SB with no throw and a bleeder to left with no throw.

Not sure what Manuel was doing pulling Pat in a tie game.  He ends up bunting Coste (which makes me scratch my head as well).

Rowand with a tough night going 1-5 with 7 LOB.

Wainwright > Any Phils starter
Tough loss but you have to hand it to the other guy sometimes, holding the best offense in the majors to one run in 8 innings should get you a W most days of the week. Oh well, it's 2.5 back instead of 1.5, still ain't over til it's over...
