Wild-card playoff Monday to determine Phils' opponent

The Milwaukee Brewers rallied past San Diego, and a few hours later Colorado held on to defeat Arizona... and so the Rockies and Padres will face off Monday to determine who gets to play the Phillies in the NLDS.

(It's still freakin' WEIRD to be writing such things. But wonderful.)

Jake Peavy, held out of the game today in favor of Brett Tomko in a questionable decision by Bud Black, will start the play-in game for San Diego. Josh Fogg goes for the Rockies.

The Phils get the wild-card winner because of the MLB rule that that the wild-card can't play the champ of their division--meaning that the Diamondbacks and Cubs will face off in the other NLDS.

Here's how we did
By my count, the Fightin's were 3-4 vs. the Rox and 4-3 vs. the Pad People.  That includes taking three of four at Petco but dropping two of three at Coors.  (Perhaps furthering dajafi's theory that OFJOAB is bad for the Phils but that a nice pitcher's park is just what the doctor ordered.)

I vote for the Padres, with Peavy throwing 135 pitches, and the Padres exhausting their bullpen

Padres-Rockies
If the phillies hadn't made it I would be rooting for the Rockies. You have to admire that team.

That said, I'm rooting for the Padres to win the game because I like playing in their park.

Re: Wild-card playoff Monday
I've got to be pulling for the Rockies.

It will give me a chance to go to Coors Field and cheer as loudly as possible for the Phils.

I vote for San Diego, too. Peavy will only be able to go once for them, Young hasn't been good in August and September, their offense isn't very good without Bradley, and it'd be an advantage to use Lohse and Moyer in PETCO. Doesn't guarantee anything, but it's a bit of a head start.

rooting interest
Yeah, I think I'm for the Padres, for the reasons FTN and enterpsmith have set forth. The Rockies might not have the better team, but they're playing out of their minds right now and scare me a little.

Re: Wild-card playoff Monday to determine Phils'
I really hope we don't end up with two weekday day games for the DS this week. I don't have any confidence in MLB in that regard. Boston will almost certainly get the prime time slot on Wednesday. The Yankees will almost certainly get it on Thursday.

Phils' opponent
The best reasons to want the Padres is that Peavy is going tonight (and maybe Hoffman too) and they lost Cameron and Bradley.  The offense difference isn't as extreme as many think.  I know OPS+ is supposed to be park adjusted, but just look at these splits...

Padres Home OPS line: .235 .310 .378 .688
Rockies Home OPS: .298 .372 .477 .850

Padres Away OPS: .264 .332 .440 .771
Rockies Away OPS: .261 .336 .395 .730

Yeah, Padres away includes Coors and Rockies away includes PetCo, but does that even out the difference, maybe?

this is working out nicely
assuming the Pads can take this to extras, I can't think of a better situation for us...tired bullpen, Peavy once, etc.

P.S. Peavy seems to struggle in big games. Perhaps that could bode well for our chances if the Padres advance.

So...
What is the rule for a play in game that never ends?

Re: Wild-card playoff Monday
Pads up 8-6.  This is probably good since we have a decent advatage in a 5 game series against them.

Rockies
We get the Rockies instead after a wild turn of events.

Trevor Hoffman has lost his mojo. If I recall correctly, he blew the Padres other chance to clinch a few days ago. Dude single handedly cost them the playoffs...twice.

Although, Matt Holliday didn't appear to touch the plate on the last play. Tim McClelland is gonna catch alot of shit for that in the papers tomorrow.

Re: Rockies
Wouldn't that be double-handedly?

Re: Rockies
yeah, I guess, but he only throws with one of his hands.

Instant Replay
In my opinion, this game has provieded a pretty compelling case for some kind of instant replay system in baseball. First, what a appeared to be a botched homerun call early in the game and later a clearly botched play at the plate. All I can say is that if this happened to the Phils I would probably already be on a man hunt for each and every member of the officiating crew.
