Minor League Recaps: 8/19
Richmond 5, Columbus 8
- J. Anderson 2-5 2B, K
- B. Canizares 2-3 2B, 2 BB
- C. Miller 3-3 2B, HR(2), BB
Wow, I think Corky Miller equaled his season hit total in Atlanta in one game with Richmond. The big story is that Josh Anderson continued his his hit streak, smacking a single in the first inning to extend it to 25 games (I think) now. Still impressive. Brent Lillibridge sucks.
Mississippi 2, Carolina 7
- M. Young 2-4 3B
- K. Kaaihue 4-4 2B, RBI
- J. Schafer 1-4
Kala Kaaihue is having a better season than Jordan Schafer. Matt Young is yet another player who has been scorching hot recently. He has 12 hits in his last 5 games. He has been prone this season to outbursts like this.
Myrtle Beach 2, Wilmington 1
- B. Hicks 2-2 HR(18), 2 RBI, K
Eh I don't really feel like anyone else deserves mentioning here. Hicks hit a 2-Run homer in the top of the 9th while trailing 1-0. Clutch hit baby!
Rome - Off
Bristol 11, Danville 3
- J. Gilmore 1-4
- G. Rodriguez 1-4 2B, RBI, 2 K
Casey Hodges got roughed up in his second straight start after dominating the league in his first 10. Steven Kent also didn't fair well in this one, though he still was striking guys out.

Minor League Recaps: 8/18
Toledo 0, Richmond 3
- J. Anderson 1-3 2B, BB
- B. Jones 3-4 2 HR(9), 3 RBI
- J. Parr 6IP 2H 0R 2BB 5K
Put Brandon Jones on that list of players having a good August. He has 5 of his 9 homers in this month and is sporting a 1.022 OPS on the month. Josh Anderson ties the International League's longest hit streak this season (I could have sworn I read it was 21 games) at 24 games. James Parr has been remarkably good this season and I think he will find his way onto the 40 man roster in the near future.
Mississippi 12, Carolina 3
- M. Young 3-5 RBI, BB, SB (25)
- R. Gorecki 4-5 2 2B, 2 RBI, K
- J. Schafer 3-5 2 HR(9), 3 RBI, 2 K
- T. Redmond 6IP 6H 3R 2BB 7K
Lots of offense in this game. Schafer is having a great August as we all know and also has 5 of his 9 homers in this month. He is making a late season push and might just force the Braves to send him to AAA to start next year. I'm sure we will see him in training camp. Todd Redmond also got his 12th win of the season. Brandon Hicks was also sent back to Myrtle Beach before after last night's game when Paul Bennett was activated from the DL.
Myrtle Beach 5, Wilmington 3
- T. Flowers 1-3 2B, RBI, K
- E. Mejia 2-4 2 HR(20), 3 RBI
- C. Rivas 6IP 1H 0R 1BB 6K
Mejia is working on his 70 XBH on the seaso. I don't know anything about Carlos Rivas but a 6 inning 1 hitter always catches my eye. Hicks also played tonight with a double in 4 ABs.
Lake County 6, Rome 9
- J. Heyward 1-3 BB
- F. Freeman 2-3 BB, K
- C. Johnson 2-4 3B, HR(23), 4 RBI, K
- C. Kimbrel 1IP 2H 1R 0BB 0K
Heyward has a modest 6 game hitting streak going. Craig Kimbrel allowed his first run in Rome and only his second earned run since turning pro. I guess we should just write this kid off. Cody Johnson is slugging .681 this month and has 7 of his homers. These hitters are loving the hot weather aren't they?
Bristol 3, Danville 7
- L.V. Ware 2-5 K, SB(10)
- J. Campusano 4-5 SB(4)
- J. Gilmore 2-5 2 RBI, K
- C. Shehan 2-3 2 2B, 2 RBI
- D. Francis 6IP 9H 3R 1BB 6K
A pretty solid game from the Appy Braves. Jon Gilmore keeps his average right at .333 for the season. Shehan is flashing some of his hitting potential. I'm still calling him my sleeper bat in this draft. The guy destroyed the college ranks this season. And Francis continues his strong work, though 6Ks is a little too 'normal'. I was really hoping to see him K like 20 guys in a game.
Tiger 6, Braves 9
- C. Culver 2-4 HR(2), 3 RBI, BB
- C. Maddox 3-5 2 2B, 2 RBI
- J. Hanson 1-2 2 BB
- D. Delgado 5IP 6H 4R 1BB 4K
Delgado had his worst start of the season but the GCL team capped a rare night where all of the minor league teams won their games. Good work!

Minor League Recaps: 8/17
Toledo 6, Richmond 5
- J. Anderson 1-4 3B, RBI,
- B. Jones 2-4 2B, HR(6), K
- J. Perry 3-4 2B, HR(8), K
Josh Anderson's streak is now up to 22 games and is the longest in the IL this season. He will most definitely get the September call up as an audition for next season. Brandon Jones may have regained a little of his power stroke this month as he has half of his season's 6 homers in August. He'd be good in LF for us next year if he can reproduce his numbers from last season.
Mississippi - Off
Reports are saying that everyone is tired of playing against Tommy Hanson and they decided to end the season early.
Potomac 3, Myrtle Beach 0
- G. Hernandez 2-4
This was a rare shut out of the offensive powerhouse that is the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. In fact it is only their 4th of the season (2 in the past 5 games though).
Lake County 5, Rome 1
- J. Heyward 1-3 2B
- F. Freeman 1-4 K
- A. Coe 3-4 2B, K
I don't have much to say about this game.
Danville - OFF
GCL Braves -OFF

Minor League Recaps: 8/16
Did I see that Frenchy had 4 hits tonight? Is that toe tap really helping him? I wish I could get the Braves up here.
Toledo 1, Richmond 8
- J. Anderson 3-5 RBI, 2 SB (40)
- B. Canizares 3-5 2B, RBI
- C. Loadenthal 3-3 BB
- M. Acosta 0.2IP 2H 0R BB 2K
Anderson is just getting more and more impressive as his little streak goes on. He is up to 21 games now (apparently I counted wrong last night). That ties the longest streak in the International League this season. Canizares is hitting .359 this month but with no real power. He has pretty much the same SLG for the past 3 months (.408) after starting off pretty hot.
Mississippi 3, Mobile 2
- J. Schafer 2-4 2B, HR(7)
- T. Hanson 5IP 1H 1R 4BB 6K
Hanson made BA's hot sheet again yesterday, I think he has been on there all but like 4 weeks this season. His combined opponents average coming into this game was .197 and that had to drop some. The run that Hanson 'gave up' was because he walked a guy in the 6th and they pulled him and then Marek Promptly gave up a 2-run homer. Wonderful guy. Schafer is also battering the ball this month as he attempts to polish his tarnished star.
Potomac 4, Myrtle Beach 8
- E. Mejia 2-4 2B, HR(18), 2 RBI
- T. Flowers 2-4 HR(16), 3 RBI
- J. Owings 2-4 2 2B, K
- C. Rohrbough 6IP 4H 4R 3BB 5K
Mejia and Flowers did their thing and the bullpen picked up Cole Rohrbough's rough outing. Flowers has an OPS over 1.300 so I guess he is having a good month. We seem to have a ton of hot hitters this month. Mejia is having a killer month as well with a .368 AVG after having an off July. I bet you didn't know that Mejia leads all of our minor leaguers in XBH. He has 68 on the season with 45 doubles, 5 triples and 18 homers. Thats pretty impressive. Now he just needs to learn how to walk (25 in 490 PAs).
Lake County 12, Rome 6
- J. Heyward 2-5 2 2B, K
- F. Freeman 1-4 2B, 2 RBI, BB
- M. FIsher 2-4 2B, 2 RBI, K
Eh, same old same old at Rome. They get some offense from the big guys but it isn't enough to back up a rough outing from Eric Cordier. It is worth noting that Kimbrel pitched 1.1 innings and struck out 4 guys. I'll take it.
Danville 1, Elizabethton 5
- J. Gilmore 2-4 K
- L.V. Ware 2-4 2 2B
Gilmore is also having a good August with an OPS at .980+. NICE!
Braves 0, Tigers 4 (6 innings due to rain)
- A. Feliz 1-2 K
Nothing worth mentioning here. Only 3 hits for the whole team.

Minor League Recaps: 8/15
Toledo 7, Richmond 2
- J. Anderson 1-4 BB, 2 K
- B. Lillibridge 1-4 2B, BB
- B. Canizares 5-5 RBI
Josh Anderson is currently riding a 22 game hit streak that has seen his average rise from .284 to .313 which is good for 4th in the International League. He leads the league in total hits and has really been on a torrid pace as of late. I've never been overly impressed with him because he just seems like another version of Greg White that doesn't walk as much. Well I guess they can give him a shot.
Mississippi 5, Mobile 7
- M. Young 4-5 2B, K
- K. Kaaihue 2-4 2B, BB
- J. Schafer 1-3 2B, 3 RBI, BB
Deunte Heath got lit up in this game giving up 7 runs in 5 innings. The amazing thing for me though is he didn't walk anyone. I'll call it a draw for him.
Potomac 4, Myrtle Beach 3
- W. Cabrera 2-5 HR(16)
- E. Mejia 3-4 2B
- S. Diamond 6IP 5H 2R 1BB 6K
Little known fact: Willie Cabrera has hit around .340 since the beginning of June. He had an abysmal April (hit .191) that dragged his stats down for the entire season. A closer look at his stats reveal he is someone we might want to keep an eye on. He just turned 22 so he isn't way too old for the league, maybe a little, but not alarmingly so. His lefty/righty splits are pretty much even and he has an .845 OPS on the season hitting in that cave they call a stadium tacked onto his bad start. He could be put on the 40 man next season and might get a midseason call up next year if some pieces fall right.
Lake County 1, Rome 4
- J. Heyward 1-4
- F. Freeman 1-4 3B, RBI, 2 K
- C. Johnson 1-4 HR(22), 2 RBI, 2 K
- R. Sullivan 5IP 5H 1R 1BB 4K
Jason Heyward is still getting hits and Cody Johnson is hitting homers and striking out. All is right in the world! Richard Sullivan has been pretty good this year. I don't know anything about him though.
Danville 2, Elizabethton 6
- M. Kennelly 2-4 HR(4), 2 RBI
- J. Teheran 2IP 2H 1R 0BB 1K
Teheran didn't get rocked this time around, but I think they are probably treating him with kid gloves right now and honestly a 17 year old in professional baseball shouldn't be able to get anyone out.
Brave 3, Yankees 2 - Game 1
- C. Culver 1-3 3B, 2 RBI
- C. Maddox 1-2 HR(4), BB
- J. Ortegano 1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
Like I said, anytime we beat the Yankees I am happy.
Yankees 0, Braves 3
- C. Maddox 2-4 2B, RBI
- Z. Spruill 5IP 7H 0R 1BB 1K
A good game for our top draft pick this season. And a sweep of a a team organized with the Yankees. WOOT!

Minor League Recaps: 8/14
Richmond - Off
Mississippi 2, Mobile 7
- M. Young 1-4 HR(3)
- J. Schafer 1-4
- K. Medlen 5IP 9H 5R 2BB 5K
I would say this was probably Medlen's worst appearance as a starter, which really isn't too bad. He has made an excellent transition to the longer role and has a 3ish ERA in 14 games started this season. At the same time his K rate and walk rate have remained solid (67 and 16 respectively in 72.1 IP). Who makes the majors first? Medlen or Hanson?
Potomac 3, Myrtle Beach 6
- G. Hernandez 1-2 3 BB, PO
- W. Cabrera 2-4 HR(15), 3 RBI
- T. Flowers 1-3 RBI, BB, K
The power hours that is Myrtle Beach just keeps rolling over their opponents. On the season the Pelicans have an 81-42 record in the the Carolina League. That is 11 games better than anyone else in the entire league. That is good for the best record in the minors also as the next closest teams in wins are both in the international league with 77 apiece.
Hagerstown 1, Rome 6
- J. Heyward 2-4 3B
- F. Freeman 2-2 RBI, BB
- C. Johnson 1-4 2B, RBI, 2 K
The big three were doing their thing again in this one. Freddie Freeman has hits in 6 straight at bats and is hitting .444 in his last 10 games and .419 for August. His power is down a little this month but he is dragging his AVG back up. Heyward's power has returned this month. He is hitting .452 for the month of August and has 8 XBH in 11 games this month. He had 10 in 47 games in June and July. Amazingly his pre and post All Star game numbers are almost identical save for the counting stats.
Danville 5, Elizabethton 6
- J. Campusano 4-5 RBI
- C. Fuller 1-3 HR(3), 2 RBI, K
- J. Gilmore 2-5 2B, K
- C. Shehan 2-5 2B, 2 K
Someone finally got to Casey Hodges. Hodges has two starts where he has given up a total of 9 runs. In his other 9 starts he has given up 4 runs. I'll take it I guess. I would like to go on record as saying I am a big fan of Jon Gilmore. I know he sucked at Rome when they started him there, but he shouldn't be given a strike simply because he isn't Jason Heyward or Freddie Freeman (I'm no saying anyone is doing that), but to point out the guy is one pace for 50+ doubles in a 500 AB season in the GCL. If there were capitol numbers I would use them, because that is a crap ton of doubles. I get the feeling that if he were back in Rome now it wouldn't be quite the same, because remember, he struggled when he got to Danville too.

Minor League Recaps: 8/13 (So many double headers)
Remember, minor league Double Headers are only 7 innings.
Richmond 16, Charlotte 6
- J. Anderson 2-5 HR(4), 4 RBI, SB(38)
- B. Jones 2-4 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, K
- B. Canizares 2-5 2 RBI, BB
Man I don't know where this came from. Off the top of my head I'm going to go ahead and say this is the biggest offensive explosion of the season for Richmond. A lot of guys had big games offensively but Chuck James got knocked around a little. I dunno, looks like he is never going to be a good major league pitcher.
Mississippi 7, Mobile 4 - Game 1
- J. Schafer 3-4 3B, HR(6), 2 RBI
- B. Hicks 0-4 K
- J. Boscan 1-3 HR(2), 2B, 3 RBI
I'm hoping Jordan Schafer is going to go on one of his XBH binges that he has been known for (known by me). I mean he is hitting .250ish on the season which isn't horrible for your first taste of AA capped with a 50 game suspension. His power isn't there like it was last year but I think when he starts to figure things out it will come back. Luckily his amazing defense pretty much guarantees that we will see him in the majors at some point.
Mississippi 2, Mobile 7 - Game 2 (In Progress)
- J. Scahfer 1-3 2B, 2 K
Reverse Score!
Myrtle Beach 1, Salem 4
- W. Cabrera 1-3 2B, RBI, BB
I mean, I tried, but nothing else good really happened here. When you score 1 run and compile 4 hits you don't leave a whole lot of room to talk about anything.
Hagerstown 2, Rome 0 - Game 1
- J. Heyward 0-2 BB
- F. Freeman 1-3 K
- J. Locke 7IP 5H 2R 0BB 5K
Well at least the pitcher had a pretty decent game in this one. Locke has been crazy erratic lately, but this was one of his "Good Davies" games. If he can nail down that consistency he has the stuff to be one of our stud pitchers. He is a cold weather guy though, and the thought on him has always been that he would need more time to learn to pitch than a lot of Southern guys that we bring in.
Hagerstown 1, Rome 5 - Game 2
- J. Heyward 1-3 2B
- F. Freeman 3-3 2 RBI
- C. Johnson 1-2 HR(21), 3 RBI
- E. Osuna 6IP 5H 1R 1BB 3K
The big bats came out and made the difference in this game with Cody Johnson delivering the big blow with the 2-Run bomb topped with a sac fly. Edgar Osuna has been remarkably consistent this season as he has had no month with an ERA over 3.86 and this is the first month he has with an ERA under 3.00 (of course we're not finished yet). I know a lot of you really like this guy and I haven't gotten on the bandwagon yet, but I think he deserves some mentioning in our post season prospect list.
Kingsport 0, Danville 2
- G. Rodriguez 1-3 HR(13), 2 K
- R. Delgado 6IP 4H 0R 1BB 6K
Randall Delgado continues to deal for Danville, lowering his ERA to 2.81 today. All of his peripherals look excellent so far this season (his walks are a little high but not horrible) and he is still just 18, so we will probably see him next year in Rome at 19. I can't wait to see what he can do.
Braves 6, Phillies 3
- R. Brooks 2-5 HR(3), BB, K
- C. Maddox 1-5 HR(3), 2 RBI, K
- E. Lagua 3IP 1H 0R 0BB 7K
Eligio Lagua is a 21 year old, RHP from the Dominican. When you strike out 7 in 3 innings of relief you get my attention. He is old to be in the GCL though so I wouldn't get too excited about it.

Minor League Recaps: 8/12
Sorry guys, I'm back. I had to move (again) from a short term apartment to my new place of residence. I went back to Augusta for a few days and then drove back to WV and slept on the floor for a couple nights until my stuff showed up. But I am back now and should resume regularly sceduled posting. Thanks for bigjoe for posting last night.
Richmond 4, Charlotte 2
- J. Anderson 2-4 2B
- B. Lillibridge 1-4 HR(4), 3 RBI
- J. Parr 6IP 4H 2R 2BB 5K
James Parr continues to pitch well and he might be a guy that gets a long look next season. I would expect to see him in the majors next year, and maybe even before Tommy Hanson simply because he is proving himself at AAA now and I would be surprised if the Braves jumped Hanson straight to the Majors. They usually let their pitchers simmer a little in AAA.
Mississippi @ Mobile - postponed
Myrtle Beach 2, Salem 8
- C. Rodriguez 1-3 HR(10), 2 RBI
The mighty Pelicans got shut down by a guy with an ERA near 8.00. That just can't happen. They still have a 4.5 game lead in the 2nd half so I guess I can forgive them. Just to point out they a re 22-6 in their last 28 games. Thats good.
Myrtle Beach 0, Salem 6
There really isn't anything worth mentioning in this game. Nothing.
Hagerstown @ Rome - Postponed
Kingsport 8, Danville 2
- G. Rodriguez 1-4 HR(12)
- J. GIlmore 2-4 2B, K
- C. Shehan 2-4
- D. Francis 4IP 4H 1R 2BB 5K
David (Ross? I keep forgetting what he goes by) Francis keeps on pitching well even though his team didn't pick him up. He has 52K in 38.2IP (largely do to that 16K no hit game) and has an ERA around 2.11. He has had good control and a solid ground ball ratio this year so everything looks promising. I think he could use a bump up. He could be our next Cole Rohrbough next season.
Braves 2, Phillies 9 - Game 1
- J. Hanson 2-4 K
- R. Stovall 2.2IP 6H 7ER 3BB 4K
A rough game for our recent draftee Robert Stovall. Jake Hanson has been one of the most consistent hitter on this team this season with a .304 average and a .715 . He will be a guy we need to keep an eye on next season.
Phillies 3, Braves 1 - Games 2
Nothing too exciting going on in this one either.

Minor League Recaps: 8/1
Columbus 2, Richmond 3
- B. Lillibridge 3-4 2 2B, BB
- B. Canizares 2-5 2B, RBI, BB
- J. Reyes 6IP 4H 2R 1BB 5K
JoJo Reyes continues to dominate AAA hitters which is really frustrating for me, but right now I don't care. What I do care about is that Brent Lillibridge had another 3 hit game tonight and tacked on 2 more XBH. Good lord he has been good lately.
Mississippi 2, Huntsville 1
- R. Gorecki 1-4 HR(10), 2 RBI
- C. Sencion 5IP 2H 1R 7BB 5K
- S. Marek 1IP 1H 0R 0B 0K
Reid Gorecki hit a 2 run homer in the 4th to give the Braves pitching staff all it needed. Snecion did his best not to walk every batter he faced. I still like him better as a starter and while he does walk a few guys, 7 seems like a bit of a blip on the radar. Stephen Marek made his second scoreless appearance for the Mississippi team.
Lynchburg 10, Myrtle Beach 11
- G. Hernandez 2-5 2B, HR(5), K, SB(12)
- W. Cabrera 2-4 HR(14)
- E. Campbell 1-2 3 BB
This game was a completion of the the game that was rained out from yesterday. Everyone in the game had a hit except for Light Hittin' Phil Britton (sorry its late).
Lynchburg 0, Myrtle Beach 1
- E. Campbell 2-3 HR(14), K
- S. Diamond 5IP 2H 0R 5BB 6K
A couple guys giving up their share of walks today but keeping the opposing offense under wraps anyway. Eric Campbell has a .265 AVG at this point and has a 31/36 BB/K ratio. Still a prospect?
Greenville 6, Rome 7
- C. Lundahl 3-5 2B, RBI
- J. Heyward 2-4 2B, K
- M. Kennelly 3-4 2B, 2 RBI
- C. Johnson 2-4 2B, 2 RBI, K
Well at least Jason Heyward is getting some XBH again. He has 4 in his last 10 games. He still hasn't regained his power stroke and he is only hitting .216 in his last 10. He might be pressing again. Recently promoted Aussie catcher Matt Kennelly had a good game and is hitting close to .500 in his short time in Rome. He's only 19 years old so he could be someone to keep an eye on. Though he hasn't hit well in rookie ball in the past. Jeff Locke got roughed up a bit too.
Pulaski 2, Danville 21
- S. Moody 2-5 3 RBI, K
- G. Rodriguez 2-5 2 2B, 4 RBI
- J. Gilmore 4-5 3 RBI, BB
- L.V. Ware 4-6 K
- S. Kent 2IP 0H 0R 0BB 4K
WOW. 21 runs huh? One pitcher for Pulaski gave up 9 hits and 8 runs and only got one out. The amazing thing here is that Danville only had 4 doubles and everything else was a single. Every starter had at least one hit, 8 of them had at least 2 hits, and 3 had 4 hits. And to me the most interesting thing was Steven Kent having another good outing. His last 4 appearances: 7.1IP 2H 0R 0BB 7K.
Phillies 10, Braves 0
Blech.

Minor League Recaps: 7/31
Columbus 6, Richmond 4
- J. Anderson 2-5 SB(28), K
- B. Lillibridge 3-5 3B, K
- D. Hernandez 2-3 2B, 2 RBI
Brent Lillibridge has been stupid in his last 10 games with a .452 BA and 7 XBH. He only has 16 on the season total. His average is 'all the way up' to .231 and put together a .381/.462/.706 line for the entire month of July. This guy is almost as much of a second half player as Tex is.
Chattanooga 0, Mississippi 7
- J. Holt 3-5
- R. Gorecki 1-5 HR(9)
- K. Kaaihue 2-4 HR(12), K
- B. Hicks 2-4 2B, RBI
- D. Heath 8IP 1H 0R 2BB 7K
Deunte Heath had a perfect game going into the 8th inning tonight but the wheels came off and he surrendered two walks and a single in the 8th to blow that. Aside from that this was his best pitched game of the season and the fact that he went 7 innings without giving up a walk is impressive in and of itself considering his control problems. Brandon Hicks also made his debut in AA tonight with a bit of success.
Lynchburg 6, Myrtle Beach 3
This game was suspended due to rain and will be completed tomorrow. I'll post the results then.
Greenville 3, Rome 0
- J. Heyward 0-4
- F. Freeman 1-4 2 K
- C. Rohrbough 6IP 5H 3R 3BB 11K
Cole's walk rate is up a little but he really isn't having any problem striking guys out so far this season. He has 58K in 44 innings so far and appears to really be getting the feel for his strike out pitches. I'm sure he is still shaking the rust off after being injured for a while. The Braves pitchers on the whole struck out 17 hitters in this game. Too bad the offense didn't have anything.
Pulaski 2, Danville 1
- C. Shehan 2-4
- C. Hodges 5IP 3H 1R 3BB 3K
Eh, Casey Hodges has an ERA around 1.36 and has given up 1 run or less in all but 2 of his 10 starts. He is 23 pitching in the Appy League though so take that for what it is worth. I still say that Chris Shehan is going to hit, I'm just not sure what type of hitter he will be and what kind of power he will have.
Braves @ Phillies
As is wont to happen with the GCL scores this game has not been posted yet. Make up something on your own and see if that is entertaining.
