With roster expansion today, the Phils already have recalled pitchers Scott Mathieson and Eude Brito from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Mathieson is now scheduled to pitch the second game of Saturday's double-header against the Braves, though a likely rainout could change that. And though he's not a callup per se, closer Tom Gordon is also expected to rejoin the team this weekend after a successful rehab appearance in Clearwater yesterday.
In the next few days, it's expected that recently optioned infielder Danny Sandoval and reliever Matt Smith will rejoin the team as well. Also possibly on the way in the next week or so: outfielder Michael Bourn, now playing with Team USA in Cuba, and pitchers Gavin Floyd and Brian Sanches. All the possible callups have had at least one stint with the Phillies this season.
Also, let us pause to give a moment's thanks that the rumor of the team trading for Cubs OF Juan F. Pierre (the middle name is a gerund, awarded to him by me in 2003) proved to be groundless. That would have been the next-worst thing to seeing Troy Aikman line up under center for the Eagles.
