Phillies All-Time Tourny Play-In Round (1 of 1)

The Phillies All-Time Tourny has started and here is how we are going to publish the results.  Each day we will post 4 games, 1 from each bracket for the first two rounds.  Rounds 3 and 4 will see two games each day and Rounds 5 and 6 will have 1 game each day.  The Play-In games are done and we have one moderate surprise.  Below are brief summaries of the series. Make sure to keep track on your own copy. I hope you enjoy it.

Play-In Game #1:

Rico Brogna vs David Bell:

Rico Brogna takes the series 3 games to 1 outscoring Bell 22-11.  David Bell stole the first game with a clutch 3 run homer in the 8th, but could only muster 8 more runs over the next 3 games.  After cruising to victory in game 3, Rico put it away in game 4 with a homer leading off the top of the 9th to go up 2-1 and after Bell loaded the bases with nobody out, he struck out, flied out and struck out.

G1: 6-3 Bell
G2: 3-2 Brogna
G3: 14-2 Brogna
G4: 2-1 Brogna

Play-In Game #2:

Manny Trillo vs Steve Jeltz

In a shocker Steve Jeltz makes it into the field of 64 by beating Manny Trillo 3 games to 2.  Jeltz cracked a 3 run homer in the 8th inning to take game 1.  Manny built up a solid lead in game 2 and Jeltz couldn't get all the way back and then Manny seemed to deliver the knockout punch with a 11-0 win in game 3.  In game 4, Jeltz put up 2 in the first to see Manny put up 4 in the bottom of the first.  Both went scoreless until the ninth.  Jeltz got his first run on a single in the 9th to go down 4-3, then a triple knotted the game at 4.  Then, with 2 outs in the top of the 9th, Jeltz dropped a suicide squeeze to plate his 5th run and take a 5-4 lead.  Manny got 2 on with 2 outs in the bottom, but Ked to end the game.  Game 5 was less dramatic as Jeltz built a 5-0 lead enroute to a series clinching 5-2 win.

G1: 7-5 Jeltz
G2: 7-6 Trillo
G3: 11-0 Trillo
G4: 5-4 Jeltz
G5: 5-2 Jeltz

Play-In Game #3:

Clay Dalrymple vs Cookie Rojas

In another series going to the wire, Cookie Rojas moves on winning 3-2.  In game 1, Clay took the series lead with 3 9th inning runs to win 5-2.  Cookie came back with a solid 5-1 win in game 2 and then took a 2-1 lead with a thrilling come-from-behind win in the bottom of the 9th in game 3.  Cookie took a 5-4 lead into the 8th, but Clay scored 1 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to go up 7-5.  That set the stage for Rojas' thrilling 2 out rally.  After striking out, he then walked and got a single and scored on a sac fly.  He then tied up the game with a double and then won it on another double.  That Cookie sure is clutch.  Clay came out firing in the next game going up 10-1 after the second enroute to a 14-9 win.  Cookie would not be denied with a 9-2 win in game 5.

G1: 5-1 Clay
G2: 5-1 Cookie
G3: 8-7 Cookie
G4: 14-9 Clay
G5: 9-2 Cookie

Play-In Game #4:

Lefty O'Doul vs Bill Hallman

Bullet Bill didn't have much of a chance against old Lefty who put up huge numbers in his 2 year in Philly.  Lefty won going away in the first two games, but Hallman looked like he had a shot in game three when he went up 4-0 after 3.  Lefty then went on to score 12 of the next 14 runs and put an end to that.  This is likely the biggest chance at a 1-16 upset in the next round.

G1: 13-0 Lefty
G2: 8-2 Lefty
G3: 12-6 Lefty
