Phillies, Manuel agree to two-year extension

Todd Zolecki reports that the Phillies and manager Charlie Manuel have agreed to a two-year contract extension with a team option for 2010.

For all his "quirks," this team did make it to the postseason, and by nearly all accounts Charlie is beloved by his players.  He deserves another shot.

With rare exceptions, manager evaluation is sort of a zero-sum game, where one man's strengths are another's weaknesses, and they tend to even out over time.  The positive environment and collegiality that Manuel fosters in his clubhouse probably balances out his otherwise notable in-game goofs.
