Round 2 - Game #9:
#1 Bobby Abreu vs #9 Jimmy Rollins
The active players certainly pique my attention more than any of the others, especially the lightening rod players like Bobby Abreu. It's a good thing this contest can't factor in guts (maybe in the next version of the software). Do we see good Jimmy or bad Jimmy? And does Abreu show any sort of heart. Oh, I can't wait. Abreu shows why he isn't clutch as he starts off game 1 with 4 runs in the first on the strength of 2 doubles and a homer (wind aided of course). Abreu shows why he was top in the league in power/speed numbers with 2 stolen bases and a 2 run homer in the 3rd. A couple of walks lead to 3 more runs in the 4th and Abreu has a comfortable 9-0 lead enroute to a 17-3 gutless victory (which featured a grand slam homerun when already up by 10). Rollins decides to turn the tables and scores 3 in the first and 1 in the third in game 2 (thanks to a no out 3 run shot in the first). Bobby then comes back in the 6th with a single, walk, double, walk, sac fly (he was trying to pad his double stats), double (whew!), single, double and double to score 6 runs. 3 more in the 8th put this game away for Bob Kelly. Rollins starts off game 3 with reaching on an error, walk and a single to load the bases. A strikeout and a 1-2-3 double play gets Abreu out of the inning. Abreu comes right back and puts 5 on the board in the bottom of the first. Rollins gets one back in the 3rd, but Abreu answers with 2 more of his own to go up 7-1. That was enough for the victory and Abreu celebrates by leaving the park early to go home and take a siesta.
G1: 17-3 Bobby Abreu
G2: 9-6 Bobby Abreu
G3: 9-5 Bobby Abreu
Bobby Abreu wins the series 3-0.
Round 2 - Game #10:
#2 Greg Luzinski vs #7 Bob Boone
The bull finds his way out of his BBQ joint and decides to roast him some Bob Boone. Boonie likely tastes better with a Szechuan sauce rather than some homemade BBQ sauce, but the Bull never said no to a meal before. The favorites certainly are putting on a show, and this series leaves little to the imagination. Bull puts up 8 before Boone scores a run in game 1. Bull puts up 7 before Boone scores a run in game 2. Bull puts up 17 runs after Boone scored the first 6 of game 3. Sorry Boonie, but Bull saw that we were giving away free hotdogs and he would not be denied.
G1: 13-4 Greg Luzinski
G2: 7-0 Greg Luzinski
G3: 17-9 Greg Luzinski
Greg Luzinski wins the series 3-0.
Round 2 - Game #11:
#5 Johnny Briggs vs #4 Johnny Callison
Battle of the Johnnies here. Let's see who is on the spot. JBriggs starts off game 1 with a walk, DP, walk and groundout. Bad omen. Callison opens the scoring on a groundout in the second. JohnnyC puts up another in the 3rd and JohnnyB ties it with a 2 run shot in the 4th. JCal quickly unties it on a 2 run error in the bottom of the inning. Briggs reties it on a 2 run single in the 7th and Callison then unties it again with a 2 run shot in the bottom of the inning. An insurance run in the 8th sealed the game for Callison. JohnnyB came out firing in game 2 with 2 homers in the first to go up 3-0. Callison knocked in 2 on a double in the 3rd, but Briggs gets them back with 1 in the 5th and 1 more in the 6th. 4 more in the 9th ties the series up 1-1. Briggs comes out again with 1 in the second and 1 more in the third. Callison goes deep in the 3rd and takes a 3-2 lead. Briggs then hits a 2 run shot in the 5th and Callison ties it back up in the 6th at 4-4. Both players miss a chance in the 7th and Callison hits back to back 1 out doubles in the 8th to take a 1 run lead. Briggs goes down with just a 2 out single in the 9th. Callison scores first in game 4 smelling blood. JBriggs takes the lead in the 2nd, but Callison takes the lead back with a 2 run shot in the third. Briggs smacks a 3 run blast to left in the 4th and adds another 3 in the 5th. 3 more in the sixth give JohnnyB a comfortable 13-4 lead. 2 more in the 9th put Briggs up 13-4. Callison leads off the bottom of the 9th with a double and then an error plates a run. After a K, he reaches on a single and then crushes a 3 run shot to make it a 13-8 game. A single and homer then pull Callison within 3, but he Ks to end the game with a man on first. Series is now tied 2-2. Briggs scores a run in the first on a walk, SB and a double. Callison ties it with back to back doubles in the bottom of the inning. Briggs gets the run right back in the top of the second. Callison takes the lead in the bottom of the 4th on a 2 run shot to put him up 3-2. JBrigg answered back with a shot of his own and puts 4 on the board in the 5th. Callison gets one back in the bottom of the inning, but is still trailing 6-4. Briggs gets 2 runners on in the 7th with 1 out, but cannot add to his lead. Callison then leads off the 8th with a homer to bring himself within one. A single and a triple then tie the game and he then gets the lead on a sac fly. Briggs leads off the top of the 9th with a single, down 7-6. He then strikes out, grounds out and then strikes out again to lose.
G1: 7-4 Johnny Callison
G2: 9-3 Johnny Briggs
G3: 5-4 Johnny Callison
G4: 13-10 Johnny Briggs
G5: 7-6 Johnny Callison
Johnny Callison wins the series 3-2.
Round 2 - Game #12:
#2 Sherry Magee vs #10 Fred Luderus
Can Freddy continue his torrid hitting against team Sherry Magee (who certainly holds the intimidating name factor in his favor). Luderus, knowing baseball doesn't pay much, parlayed his expert skills into a rap and then movie career. This boy has got some talent. The bats certainly were bipolar in this series. Game 1 saw Freddy put up 1 run in the first and then Sherry answer back with 4 in the second, 2 in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th, and 6 in the 7th. Fred then put up 9 runs against the Sherry scrubs in the last two innings. Fred, decided to keep his good hitting going scored 6 to start off game 2, then 1 in the second, 1 in the 4th, 6 in the 5th and then he got really crazy with 7 in the 7th and 7 more in the 8th. Unfortunately for Fred, this counts as just one win. And in common misconception fashion, he goes and doesn't score a run in the next game. What a regular old Phillie. With his back against the wall, Fred makes a game of it in game 4, but his 4 runs in the last 3 innings fell just short and Sherry moves on to the Sweet 16.
G1: 21-12 Sherry Magee
G2: 28-2 Fred Luderus
G3: 5-0 Sherry Magee
G4: 9-7 Sherry Magee
