Utley breaks hand; to DL

Update [2007-7-27 15:43:47 by dajafi]: Todd Zolecki reports that Utley's surgery today was a success, and he could be back within four weeks. That's probably about as good as we could hope for. Also, Brett Myers has been activated and Mike Zagurski optioned to triple-A.

As if it weren't enough to lose the game, we've now lost the team MVP.

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley broke his right hand when he was hit by a pitch from Washington Nationals pitcher John Lannon in the fifth inning today.

Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he expects Utley back before the end of the season, but there was no immediate prognosis. Utley broke the fourth metatarsal bone.

Utley also thinks he'll be back in short order, maybe in three weeks. But the general recovery time for this sort of injury is 4-6 weeks, and it's not unusual for a guy with a broken hand to come back at less than full strength offensively.

Brett Myers might take Utley's spot on the active roster, and it seems likely that Abe Nunez and perhaps Greg Dobbs will see time at second base.
