Game 28: Young vs. Moyer

New, comments

The second game of the Pads-Phils series features another pitching battle of Old Lion vs. Young Gun, even if Jamie Moyer and Chris R. Young don't quite measure up to Greg Maddux and Cole Hamels. Moyer (1-2, 4.05) made it through six gutty innings against the Brewers last week, taking a no-decision in a game the Phils ultimately won; he's 6-6 with a 4.80 ERA against San Diego over his career. (Remember, though, most of those were probably against the Tony Gwynn-era Padres.)

Young, who actually bested Hamels 1-0 in a game at the rather spacious Petco Park last July 19, hasn't been the same pitcher since going on the disabled list about a week after that victory. In fact, he's only won once in 16 starts since then, going 1-7 with a 5.20 ERA. His most recent effort, though, looked like the pre-injury pitcher: seven innings, two hits, three walks and ten strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to the Giants on April 24.
