Right after contending with one of the National League's two surprise teams in Florida, the Phillies come to St. Louis and face the other. The Cardinals are tied with the Phils for the second-best record in the NL (40-28, behind only the Cubs), but they're currently without both their best pitcher (Adam Wainwright) and hitter (Albert Pujols), and a sense remains that they're playing somewhat over their heads. One of the biggest reasons why is Todd Wellemeyer, who starts tonight's game for the Cards. After three undistinguished seasons for three different teams, mostly as a reliever, the 29 year-old Wellemeyer has taken to the starting rotation with a 7-1 record and 2.93 ERA, likely good enough to earn an all-star berth. He's got a 3.52 ERA and no decisions in five career appearances against the Phillies.
