Phillies and Off-season Leagues

Off-season leagues in Arizona and Venezuela have started up. Baseball America releases its Eastern League top prospects list.

Reading Phillies

Baseball America released their list of Top 20 Eastern League prospects. Tommy Joseph (#10), Cody Asche (#17), and Jon Pettibone (#19) made the list. Babe Ruf did not:

Reading first baseman/outfielder Darin Ruf won the EL MVP award, almost took the league's triple crown and led the minors with 38 homers (including 20 in JulyAugust) but didn't crack the Top 20. He's 26 and scouts aren't sold that he'll be able to handle major league pitching.

Other Phillies Farm Teams

BA also released their Top 20 of the International League. Tyler Cloyd (#19) was the only Iron Pig to be included. Heading the list are Matt Harvey (RHP, Mets), Starling Marte (OF, Pirates), Chris Archer (RHP, Rays), Julio Teheran (RHP, Braves), and Chris Parmelee (1B, Twins).

For the Florida State League, Clearwater lefties Jesse Biddle (#10), and Adam Morgan (#12) both made the list. The top five are Jose Fernandez (RHP, Marlins), Gerrit Cole (RHP, Pirates), Jameson Tallon (RHP, Pirates), Christian Yelich (OF, Marlins), and Nick Castellanos (3B, Tigers).

3B Maikel Franco (#16) was the only Blue Claw on the Sally League list.

Shortstop Roman Quinn was the 3rd ranked prospect in the short-season New York-Penn League.

Outfielder Carlos Tocci was ranked 6th for the Gulf Coast League.

Venezuelan Winter League

As Jay Floyd reported (h/t crowhop), Freddy Galvis went 4 for 5 with a home run in his first game in the VWL. Phillies farmhands playing in Venezuela:

The Phils are scattered across several teams: Galvis with Zulia, Hernandez and Duran with Margarita, Friend and Ruf with La Guaira, and Gillies with Lara.

Matt Gelb had a nice primer on the AFL this week. The Phillies have several players on the Peoria Javelinas, who are led by Reading manager Dusty Wathan:
