Reportedly, the Baltimore Orioles will acquire Jim Thome from the Phillies for two minor league players. Rumors suggest they are pitcher Kyle Simon and catcher Gabriel Lino. More information as facts become available. Ken Rosenthal, who has a long history covering the Orioles, is the reported source per the Orioles radio broadcast today, though he credited JIm Salisbury who did not suggest trading Joe Blanton.
Deal official per Orioles.
Simon, a 21 year old out of the University of Arizona, is 2-8 with a 3.96 ERA and just 49 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched for the Orioles' Class A affiliate in the Carolina League.
Lino, 19, a catcher from Venezuela, is hitting a lusty .218/.282/.340 for the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Orioles' low-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League.
More details should be announced once the Orioles wrap up their afternoon contest against the Cleveland Indians.
Thome, 41, had struggled as a pinch-hitter this season, but was tremendous during the Phillies road interleague series, going .295/.380/.682 in the month of June with five home runs.
The Phillies recalled outfielder Jason Pirdie from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Thome's spot on the 25 man roster.
