Confirming what was reported last night, the Phillies have placed rookie infielder Freddy Galvis on the 15 day Disabled List with a low back strain, and have activated infielder/outfielder Michael Martinez, who had spent the entire season so far on the Disabled List due to a broken foot suffered in Spring Training.
Although he hasn't exactly scorched the ball by most normal standards, Galvis had provided a good bit more offense than many thought he would, leading the team with 15 doubles to go along with a .617 OPS. His primary contribution to the team -- and an area where he will be greatly missed -- is his highlight reel defense at second base, including an insane behind-the-back catch in last night's loss to the Dodgers.
Martinez, 29, posted a .196/.259/.282 line in 234 plate appearances in 2011, and will probably be the primary starting second baseman until either Galvis or the prodigal Chase Utley return from injury. Happy days are here again!
