With rumors heating up around the contract talks between Hamels and the Phillies, a lot of numbers have been popping up, seemingly out of nowhere. 130MM? 140MM? Will he get the largest ever contract for a pitcher? Will his benefits package include free dog spa visits? The contract details get crazier as the days go by, with little basis other than quotes from "an official of one club" or "sources familiar with the team's thinking".

It's really just mindless speculation. Even if these "sources" represent real people, they're not likely to have a real grasp on the ongoing negotiations. It's not as if Ruben is answering Jon Heyman's phone calls with hourly updates on the situation.
