The Phillies signed starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano to a minor league contract earlier today. In 20 starts with the Marlins last year, Zambrano had a 4.49 ERA but a 1.50 WHIP. Looking deeper, he had a 4.84 xFIP and 0.7 fWAR.
As this is a minor league deal, I see no downside whatsoever. And hey, he might be able to pinch hit late in games. Over the past three seasons, Zambrano has posted a .246/.267/.354 line, good for a 66 OPS+. That's 16 points higher than Ben Revere's 2013 OPS+ currently sits.
