Tonight, the Phillies face an old friend, one they know very, very well. Yes, tonight the Phillies face Mike Pelfrey, previously of the New York Mets and now of the Minnesota Twins. Pelfrey barely pitched in 2012 as he had Tommy John surgery early in the season.
As I've implied, the Phillies and Pelfrey have faced each other numerous times. Pelfrey has pitched 111 2/3 innings against the Phillies (second only to the Washington Nationals, though he's started more games against the Phillies). In those 111 2/3 innings, Pelfrey has a sparkling 5.16 ERA. In fact, he hasn't been particularly good against any of his former NL East opponents. I know, you're totally shocked. Check out these splits for further proof. (And perhaps for a good laugh.)
After Tommy John surgery, Pelfrey hoped for a new start with the Twins. Unfortunately, it's been more of the same. In 12 games and 57 2/3 innings, he's pitched to a 6.40 ERA, which is, you know, kind of bad. I'd say this evidence of Pelfrey's recent and longstanding suckitude bodes well for the Phillies, but you all know it doesn't, and Pelfrey is going to throw a no-hitter tonight. You heard it here first!
Tyler Cloyd takes the mound for the Phillies tonight, hoping to make his two straight decent starts into three. Discuss the game in the comments below. Bonus points if you include links/clips of the Phillies hitting the crap out of some Mike Pelfrey pitches.
