Recap of Thursday's games

USA TODAY Sports

Lehigh Valley 3, Toledo 0

Raul Valdes - 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 8 K, 4 GB, 4 FB

Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 4, R, RBI, K

Cody Asche - 0 for 4, 3 K

Darin Ruf - 2 for 3, RBI, BB, K

Justin Friend - 1 IP, 2 H, BB

JC Ramirez - 1 IP, BB, 2 K

Former Phillies bullpen arm Raul Valdes channeled his inner Cliff Lee and put forth his best performance of the season. He stifled Toledo hitters through 7 innings and Iron Pig pitchers only allowed 8 baserunners all game. Darin Ruf continued his hot streak and walked yet again. Pairing that and this excellent article on Delmon Young yesterday, it begs the question whether an outfield shuffle would benefit the big club.

Portland 5, Reading 2

Jesse Biddle - 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 BB(!!!), 5 K, 2 HR, 4 GB, 3 FB

Chase Utley - 0 for 5, K

Maikel Franco - 2 for 4 (1st AA start)

Zach Collier - 0 for 3, BB, K

Sebastian Valle - 2 for 3, 2 RBI, BB

Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 4, K

Kyle Simon - 1 IP, 2 H

This isn't what you want to see out of your number one SP prospect. Biddle's command was off as evidenced by the 6 BB, a season high (42 on the year). Two of the walks wound up coming around to score. The red hot Maikel Franco made his first start at AA and continued to produce. Chase Utley obviously is not a huge fan of AA pitching, otherwise he would be a little more hit happy (or he isn't completely healthy).

Clearwater 6, Lakeland 4

Perci Garner - 5 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 7 GB, 2 FB

Aaron Altherr - 2 for 3, R, HR, 2 RBI (outfield assist)

Kelly Dugan - 0 for 3, R, BB

Chris Serritella - 2 for 4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, K

Harold Martinez - 1 for 4

Colby Shreve - 2 IP, 4 H, BB, 2 K

Garner was mostly cruising until a rough 6th inning where he allowed 4 straight hits and a walk before being pulled. The Thresher offense continued to produce after an off-day yesterday. The bat of Serritella has been excellent. In his last 10 games he is 13 for 37 with 4 walks.

Lakewood 9, West Virginia 4

Kevin Walter - 3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, K, 5 GB, 2 FB

Roman Quinn - 2 for 4, R, BB, SB, CS

Brian Pointer - 2 for 5, 2B, RBI, 2 K, CS

Mitch Walding - 1 for 5, R, K

Larry Greene - 1 for 4, 2B, BB

Carlos Tocci - 1 for 4, R, 2B, HBP

The Blue Claws came back from the break and put up runs in 6 of 9 innings. They capitalized on their 15 baserunners and received contributions from (almost) everyone in the lineup. There was a Larry Greene sighting! Not a homerun, but it's good to see him driving the ball.

Jamestown 12, Williamsport 6

Shane Martin - 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, K, 3 GB, 3 FB

Andrew Pullin - 1 for 4

Zach Green - 1 for 4, R, HR, 2 K (fielding error)

Dylan Cozens - 0 for 3, R, BB, K, SB

Andrew Knapp - 2 for 3, R, 2B, RBI (throwing error, passed ball)

Gabriel Lino - 1 for 4, R, HR, 3 RBI, 3 K (2 errors, fielding, pickoff)

This was not a pretty outing for the Crosscutter pitching staff. Over the game they gave up 12 R and 10 ER on 9 hits and 7 walks. Andrew Knapp seems to be transitioning nicely into a hitting role for Williamsport going 4 for 9 in his first 3 games, including two doubles. His catching will obviously be a work in progress.
