Phillies Minor League Roundup, July 16, 2013

Lehigh Valley with an off day due to the International League All-Star Game (tonight). Clearwater, Lakewood and Williamsport with an off day, but will be back in action tonight.

USA TODAY Sports

Reading 6, Trenton 3

Mario Hollands - 6 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, K, 5 GB, 11 FB
Cesar Hernandez - 2 for 3, R, RBI
Maikel Franco - 1 for 3, R, RBI, BB, K
Jim Murphy - 1 for 1, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB (fielding error)
Kelly Dugan - 0 for 4, K
Zach Collier - 0 for 4, 2 K
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 4, K

Mario Hollands didn't get the victory, but this was his first start with Reading this season. Hollands was with Reading primarily as a reliever before being demoted to A Clearwater to be a starter. This turned out to be an easy transition and Hollands dominated. This wasn't his greatest start as his strikeouts were lower than average and his GB/FB ratio was way up. The Fightin's went up courtesy of a 4 run bottom of the 7th in which they received RBI singles from Hernandez and Franco. An error and wild pitch also helped score some additional runs in the inning. I don't often tag Jim Murphy in these recaps, but he is having an excellent season (albeit against guys much younger than he is) and just smashed his 16th homer and has 58 RBIs on the season. He is organizational filler, but could be a big league September call-up for an additional bench player.

GCL Tigers 8, GCL Phillies 6

Feliberto Sanchez - 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, K, 2 GB, 5 FB
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 4, R, 2B, BB, K
Robinson Torres - 2 for 5, R, 2B, 2 K (fielding error)
Wilmer Oberto - 3 for 5, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, R, 2 K
Nick Ferdinand - 3 for 4, RBI, SB
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 4, R, 2B, K

A tough 5th inning sunk the GCL Phils. Sanchez and Will Morris combined to give up all 8 runs (6 earned). The offense however woke up and received big contributions from the entire lineup. Wilmer Oberto with 2 homers and 9 of his 17 hits on the season are extra-base hits. JP Crawford, Oberto and Ferdinand seem to be the offensive drivers of this team early on.
