Phillies Minor League Roundup, July 17, 2013

USA TODAY Sports

Reading 6, Trenton 5

Seth Rosin - 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR, 7 GB, 4 FB
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 3, R, RBI, SB
Zach Collier - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, RBI, SB
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4, RBI
Jim Murphy - 2 for 4, 2 HR, 3 RBI
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 3, HBP, CS

Seth Rosin wasn't exactly stellar. A big 1st inning didn't look promising, but was able to go 6 innings and earn the win. The offense came alive from the bats of Collier and Murphy. Collier was a home run short of the cycle and Murphy mashed his 17th and 18th homer on the season. Cesar Hernandez remains with the club while Lehigh Valley is on their All-Star break.

Bradenton 9, Clearwater 3

Severino Gonzalez - 5 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HR, 5 GB, 5 FB
Jiwan James - 1 for 4
Matt Tolbert - 0 for 3, K (throwing error)
Cameron Perkins - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI
Chris Serritella - 0 for 4, K
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 3, R, BB, SB
Peter Lavin - 2 for 4, 2 2B, RBI

Gonzalez earns the trip back up to Clearwater after dominating for Lakewood as a starter. His first start at the higher level didn't go quite well. Altherr is having a pretty darn good season. His current slash line sits at .278/.346/.481 to go along with 17 steals (3 CS) and 34 walks. 41 of his 88 hits are for extra bases. He is one of those toolsy guys the Phillies love to develop. If he is able to keep this up at the higher levels, the Phillies might have finally lucked out on one of these guys.

Lakewood 5, Augusta 4

Jeb Stefan - 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 4 GB, 2 FB
Brian Pointer - 1 for 5, 3 K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 5, R, 3 K, SB
Jonathan Roof - 2 for 5, R, K
Willie Carmona - 2 for 5, R, 2 K
Art Charles - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI
Larry Greene - 1 for 4, BB, 2 K
Angelo Mora - 2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI, SB (throwing error)

Short outing from Stefan, but it wasn't necessarily a bad one. The game went back and forth a majority of the game and required extra innings. In the top of the 10th, after singles from Walding and Carmona, a wild pitch allowed Walding to come in and score. The Blueclaws would then go on to win. Roof continues to hit at an accelerated level. I want him to eventually make the Phillies so that there would be a Roof and Ruf in the lineup.

Hudson Valley 7, Williamsport 3

Shane Martin - 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 2 K, 7 GB, 2 FB
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
Andrew Knapp - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K
Zach Green - 0 for 3, K, HBP (throwing error)
Dylan Cozens - 1 for 4, K (picked off 1st)
Gabriel Lino - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, RBI, K
Logan Pierce - 2 for 4, R, 2B, RBI

Not a great game from the Crosscutters. Shane Martin's last two starts haven't been as good as his previous starts. Knapp and Green are blanked, but the offense did receive a little boost from Lino and Pierce. Also of note that Lino didn't have a passed ball while behind the plate, which is always a good thing.

GCL Phillies 9, GCL Astros 1 (Game 1 of doubleheader)

Adam Morgan - 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 5 K, 1 GB, 4 FB
Robinson Torres - 2 for 4, 3 R
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 2, 2 R, 2B, RBI, 2 BB, CS
Wilmer Oberto - 2 for 3, HR, 5 RBI, BB
Jose Pujols - 0 for 3
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 2, R, BB

Adam Morgan with his 2nd rehab start and it was a beauty! That should be expected from a guy that was handling AAA hitting earlier this year. I would think he will make the gradual climb back up to Lehigh. Sandberg was an on base machine this game. Oberto with a 3 run homers and a 2 RBI single in the game. Oberto is on a bit of a power surge lately. That is his 3 homer in his last 2 games and is slugging .875 in his last 10 games. Jose Pujols is either completely lost or has considerably bad luck. I can't exactly tell from the boxscore, so if any readers have any insight it would be greatly appreciated.

GCL Astros 3, GCL Phillies 1 (Game 2 of doubleheader, makeup of 7/1 game)

Elniery Garcia - 5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR, 8 GB, 2 FB
JP Crawford - 1 for 2, R, BB (2 errors, fielding and throwing)
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 3, K

Of course there was a down game after a spectacular game 1. The offense went cold, despite a pretty good performance from Garcia, whose only real mistake come on a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 2nd.
