Phillies Minor League Roundup, July 5-7, 2013

Hunter Martin

Syracuse 5, Lehigh Valley 0 (July 5)

Ethan Martin - 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, HR, 5 GB, 3 FB
Cesar Hernandez - 0 for 3, BB, K
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 4, K
Cody Asche - 0 for 4, K
Darin Ruf - 1 for 4, 3 K
Leandro Castro - 1 for 4
Tyson Gillies - 0 for 4, K

Iron Pig bats were silenced by Syracuse's Caleb Clay. Ethan Martin with a not so great outing. Lehigh loses 3 of 4 to the worst team in the International League and fall 2.5 games back in the wild card race.

Scranton/WB 4, Lehigh Valley 2 (July 6)

Raul Valdes - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 8 K, 4 GB, 1 FB
Cesar Hernandez - 1 for 4, R, K
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 4, K
Cody Asche - 0 for 3, R, BB, K, SB
Leandro Castro - 1 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Cameron Rupp - 0 for 4, 2 K
Tyson Gillies - 1 for 4, K, SB
Mauricio Robles - 1 IP, 2 GB, 1 FB

Another uneven effort from the Iron Pigs who have now dropped their last 4.

Scranton/WB 6, Lehigh Valley 2 (July 7)

Tom Cochran - 5 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 3 HR, 2 GB, 4 FB
Cesar Hernandez - 2 for 5, 2B, RBI, 2 K
Freddy Galvis - 0 for 5, 3 K
Cody Asche - 2 for 4, R, SB
Leandro Castro - 1 for 4, R, K
Tyson Gillies - 1 for 4, 2 K

Scranton went up early and didn't relinquish the lead. The Rail Riders are a team that is littered with future hall of famers (Derek Jeter) and former major leaguers (Corey Patterson, Brent Lillibridge, Dan Johnson). Asche is batting .314/.400/.371 in his last 10 games with 4 stolen bases. He should get his chance with the Phils if there are any trades around the deadline or injuries occur. The Pigs remain 2.5 games back in the wildcard.

Trenton 8, Reading 0 (July 5)

Brody Colvin - 2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 GB, 0 FB (two wild pitches)
Zach Collier - 0 for 4, K (outfield assist)
Maikel Franco - 2 for 4
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, K
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 3, 2 K

I'd be very surprised if we see Colvin back next year, he clearly isn't close to the prospect we once thought we had a few years ago. Two hit game for Franco and Dugan with a hit in his first AA game!

Trenton 5, Reading 2 (July 6)

David Buchanan - 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 8 GB, 6 FB
Zach Collier - 2 for 4, 2B
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, K
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 4, K (fielding error)
Tommy Joseph - 0 for 3, BB, K

Buchanan was cruising before a tough 7th inning when he surrendered the lead. Franco with a 2 run homer to continue his awesomeness.

Trenton 3, Reading 2 (July 7)

Austin Wright - 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3 GB, 5 FB
Zach Collier - 1 for 4, R
Maikel Franco - 3 for 4, R, 2B, RBI
Kelly Dugan - 0 for 4
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 4, 3 K
Anthony Hewitt - 0 for 3, BB, K

The Fightin's could not capitalize with RISP and wound up losing after a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th. Franco continues to rake. Reading gets swept in the weekend series.

Clearwater 2, Dunedin 1 (July 5)

Mario Hollands - 8.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 8 GB, 4 FB
Aaron Altherr - 0 for 5, 3 K (outfield assist)
Chris Serritella - 2 for 5, R, 3B, K
Cameron Perkins - 1 for 5, RBI, 2 K

Mario Hollands was going for the complete game shutout before giving up the tying run in the top of the 9th. The Threshers went on to win in the bottom of the 11th with a walk-off single from Perkins.

Clearwater 3, Lakeland 0 (July 6)

Jeremy Horst - 1 IP, 1 H
Hoby Milner - 7 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 K, 8 GB, 6, FB
Aaron Altherr - 2 for 4, 2B
Chris Serritella - 1 for 3, R, 2B, BB
Cameron Perkins - 1 for 3, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB
Harold Martinez - 1 for 3, RBI

Milner with 2 consecutive good outings. The top of the lineup fared well and accounted for most of their production.

Lakeland 5, Clearwater 2 (July 7)

Nick Hernandez - 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 K, 9 GB, 5 FB
Matt Tolbert - 1 for 4, K
Aaron Altherr - 0 for 4
Chris Serritella - 2 for 3, HR, BB, K
Cameron Perkins - 1 for 4, HR, K

The Thresher bullpen crumbles in the 8th and 9th inning handing them a loss. The only Clearwater runs came on solo shots from Serritella and Perkins. Serritella is on fire!

Greensboro 7, Lakewood 6 (July 5)

Jeb Stefan - 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 K, HR, 8 GB, 6 FB
Brian Pointer - 1 for 4, HR, BB, 2 K
Willie Carmona - 2 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Larry Greene - 2 for 5, 2B, 3 K (fielding error)
Mitch Walding - 2 for 5, R (fielding error)
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 5, R, SB

Lakewood loses in the bottom of the 9th after giving up runs in innings 6 through 9.

Lakewood 10, Greensboro 3 (July 6)

Jonathan Musser - 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR, 4 GB, 5 FB
Brian Pointer - 2 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, BB, K
Willie Carmona - 1 for 5, R, 3 K
Larry Greene - 2 for 3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 4, R, 2 K (fielding error)

Big game from Fudgie, Pointer and Jonathan Roof (2 run homer). Mitch Walding continues to struggle in the field with his 18th error on the season.

Lakewood 10, Greensboro 7 (July 7)

Severino Gonzalez - 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 5 K, HR
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 6, 2 R, 2B, K
Jonathan Roof - 4 for 5, 2 R, 2 2B, HR, 6 RBI
Willie Carmona - 2 for 4, RBI, BB, K
Larry Greene - 0 for 4, BB, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 4, R, 4 K

Gonzalez was not as impressive in this start, but got the win because of the suddenly explosive Lakewood offense. Jonathan Roof with a rare 6 RBI game. Lakewood wins the series, but still sit at the bottom of the standings.

Williamsport 6, Mahoning Valley 3 (July 5)

Shane Martin - 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 3 K, HR, 9 GB, 2 FB
Gustavo Martinez - 0 for 4, R, BB, 4 K, SB
Andrew Pullin - 0 for 4, R, 3 K, SB (fielding error)
Dylan Cozens - 2 for 5, R, 2 K, SB
Zach Green - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, RBI
Logan Pierce - 1 for 5, 2B, RBI, 2 K (throwing error)

Despite striking out an outrageous 13 times, they came out on top in large part due to their 10 hits and aggressive base-running.

Williamsport 6, Mahoning Valley 2 (July 6)

Mitch Gueller - 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 3 K, 6 GB, 5 FB
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 3, 3 K
Zach Green - 0 for 4, R, BB, 2 K
Gabriel Lino - 2 for 4, RBI, BB, SB (passed ball)
Logan Pierce - 3 for 4, 2 R, RBI, BB, K

Solid effort from Gueller on top of a great game from Lino who steals a base! Logan Pierce continues his sizzling hot streak and should be getting bumped up to Lakewood if he keeps this up.

Williamsport, Auburn (July 7 - rained out, postponed)

GCL Phillies 5, GCL Yankees2 1 (July 5)

Nic Hanson - 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 8 GB, 2 FB
Feliberto Sanchez - 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, K, 5 GB, 3 FB
JP Crawford - 2 for 4, BB, K, SB, CS
Jose Pujols - 1 for 4, 2 R, BB, 2 K

A 4 run 6th inning would prove to be enough. JP Crawford continues to hit in the rookie league and shows prowess on the base-paths.

GCL Yankees2 8, GCL Phillies 4 (July 6)

Alejandro Arteaga - 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 8 K, HR, 3 GB, 2 FB
JP Crawford - 4 for 5, R (fielding error)
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 4, R, BB (outfield assist)
Jiwan James - 1 for 2, BB
Matt Tolbert - 3 for 4, 2 RBI, K (missed catch error)
Jose Pujols - 1 for 4, 2B, RBI, K (fielding error)
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 4, HR, K

Things were all tied up until the top of the 9th when Ronald Mendez gave up 5 runs (2 earned) to blow the game wide open. The GCL Phils outhit their opponents 13 to 10, but 4 errors on the game undid their effort.
