Lehigh Valley 6, Gwinnett 1 (August 9)
David Buchanan - 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, K, 7 GB, 6 FB
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 4, RBI, K
Steve Susdorf - 2 for 4, 2 R, BB
Cody Overbeck - 3 for 4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB
Leandro Castro - 2 for 5, R
Cameron Rupp - 2 for 5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 K (missed catch error)
Derrick Mitchell - 3 for 5, 2 R, HR, K, SB
Lehigh feasted on former Phillies farmhand Yohan Flande for 3 runs on 10 hits. The Iron Pigs had 16 hits on the day. David Buchanan seems to be taking the promotion to AAA in stride. In his first two starts now he has gone 14 innings, giving up 12 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) while striking out 5 and only walking 1. Pretty impressive preview. Meanwhile, Derrick Mitchell with a heck of a baseball game. He has been incredibly consistent all season.
Lehigh Valley 9, Gwinnett 2 (August 10)
Greg Smith - 6 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 5 GB, 3 FB
Phillippe Aumont - 1 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Pete Orr - 3 for 5, R, RBI, 2 SB
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 4, RBI, 2 K
Tyler Henson - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2 2B, BB, K
Derrick Mitchell - 2 for 5, R, RBI, K
Cameron Rupp - 2 for 5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Tyson Gillies - 3 for 4, 3 R, 2B, BB (outfield assist)
IronPigs explode for 15 hits and 18 total baserunners in a blowout win. Greg Smith once again was highly effective, while Aumont's showing was an adventure. Big games all around from the offense. Gillies in particular was sharp with 3 (!!!!) hits and also threw out a runner at home.
Lehigh Valley 3, Gwinnett 1 (August 11)
Adam Morgan - 3.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 GB, 4 FB
Mauricio Robles - 2 IP, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Pete Orr - 1 for 4, R, RBI
Freddy Galvis - 1 for 3, RBI
Steve Susdorf - 1 for 4, R
Leandro Castro - 1 for 4, RBI
Tyson Gillies - 1 for 3, R, 2B
Adam Morgan had been progressing nicely, but this line kind of threw me. He was limited to 82 pitches and didn't strike anyone out. However, the bullpen threw a combined 5.1 shutout innings, which they sorely needed. The offense was ho-hum, but capitalized by going 2 for 5 with RISP. Lehigh will go for the 4 game series sweep this afternoon against Gwinnett. Their current 3 game winning streak has them a game out of the wildcard standings.
Reading 6, New Britain 5 (August 9)
Brody Colvin - 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 5 GB, 3 FB
Austin Wright - 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K
Zach Collier - 1 for 3, 2 R, K, SB, HBP
Maikel Franco - 1 for 4
Jim Murphy - 2 for 4, 2 RBI, K
Kelly Dugan - 0 for 4, 2 K
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 2, R, 2 BB
Anthony Hewitt - 2 for 3, R, RBI, K, SB
Brody Colvin started a game and it wasn't an outright disaster. It sounds cruel, but this is my standard reaction to anything Brody Colvin. Austin Wright continues his downward spiral, but now in the bullpen. Reading beat up on Rock Cat starter BJ Hermsen for 5 runs. Franco hasn't had a multi-hit game in awhile, which has been a bit discouraging. He has hit safely in 7 of his last 10 games, which isn't too shabby.
New Britain 8, Reading 5 (August 10)
Bobby Bramhall - 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, K, 2 HR, 7 GB, 2 FB
Albert Cartwright - 2 for 5, 3B, RBI, 2 SB
Zach Collier - 1 for 5, K, CS
Maikel Franco - 2 for 4, 2B, BB
Kelly Dugan - 0 for 5, 2 K
Sebastian Valle - 0 for 3, BB, 3 K
Edgar Duran - 1 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Bramhall's conversion to a starter hit a snag in his second start and was hurt by the long ball. Franco with his first multi-hit game in what seems like forever. Former Phillies prospect Trevor May gets the win against his former club and super prospect Miguel Sano hits a homer.
Reading 14, New Britain 5 (August 11)
Mario Hollands - 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 8 K, 2 HR, 3 GB, 4 FB
Austin Wright - 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, HR
Albert Cartwright 2 for 3, 2 R, 2 BB, HBP
Zach Collier - 2 for 4, R, RBI, K, HBP
Maikel Franco - 3 for 5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI, K (throwing error)
Kelly Dugan - 2 for 5, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Matt Tolbert - 2 for 5, 2 R, 3B, 2 RBI, K
Sebastian Valle - 1 for 4, 2 R, RBI, BB
Mario Hollands got all the run support he needed in this game. Franco busts out in a big way in this game with a grand slam in the bottom of the 5th. Fellow bash brother Dugan with a solo shot himself. The offense went wild with 16 hits, 4 walks and 2 hit batters to boot. Reading takes the series 2 to 3. Reading pitchers had a tough go with Miguel Sano, who went deep twice and had 6 hits in the series.
Clearwater, Daytona (August 9, postponed due to rain)
Clearwater 4, Daytona 3 (August 10)
Severino Gonzalez - 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, HR, 1 GB, 7 FB
Peter Lavin - 2 for 5, R, 2 2B, K
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 4, 2 K, CS, picked off (outfield assist)
Chris Serritella - 1 for 3, R, 2B, RBI, BB, K
Cameron Perkins - 2 for 5, R, 3B
Bob Stassi - 3 for 5, R, RBI, SB
Harold Martinez - 0 for 4, BB
Severino Gonzalez with an odd start. He was giving up a lot of fly balls, but managed to stay out of trouble. He is definitely a guy to watch to make the jump to Reading perhaps. He didn't get the win in this game because of a blown lead. The Threshers would go onto win in the 11th after an error would score Perkins after hitting a 1 out triple.
Lakeland 7, Clearwater 6 (August 11)
Ethan Stewart - 7 IP, 14 H, 5 R, 5 ER, BB, 3 K, 11 GB, 3 FB
Carlos Alonso - 2 for 5, R, 2B, BB
Peter Lavin - 2 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, BB, K SB
Aaron Altherr - 1 for 5, BB, K
Chris Serritella - 1 for 4, RBI, 2 BB, K
Cameron Perkins - 3 for 5, R, RBI, SB, HBP
Harold Martinez - 3 for 6, R, RBI, K
Tough loss for the Threshers, as they go down in the 11th inning after taking the lead briefly in the top of the inning. Ken Giles was hit with the loss. Ethan Stewart with a very odd outing, giving up a season high 14 hits.
West Virginia 3, Lakewood 1 (August 9)
Ryan Demmin - 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 9 K, 8 GB, 2 FB
Brian Pointer - 1 for 3, R, 2 BB, 2 K (outfield assist)
Larry Greene - 0 for 5, 3 K
Willie Carmona - 3 for 4, BB
Art Charles - 1 for 5, RBI, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 1 for 4
Alejandro Villalobos - 0 for 3, BB (fielding error)
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 3
Ryan Demmin makes a splash in the South Atlantic League in a big way. He was unfortunately saddled with the loss, but that was as much fault to the defense. Demmin came way from the independent Frontier League. He is 25 years old, so he is slightly old for the league. He is a guy that can keep moving up if he keeps this up.
West Virginia 5, Lakewood 2 (August 10)
Jon Prosinski - 4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 3 K, HR, 11 GB, 1 FB
Brian Pointer - 0 for 4, K
Willie Carmona - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B
Art Charles - 2 for 4, K
Mitch Walding - 2 for 4
Larry Greene - 0 for 4
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 4, 2 K
Prosinski has regressed a bit since being promoted to Lakewood, which isn't too surprising. The Blueclaw offense went 0 for 8 with RISP, which amounted for the low run production despite 9 hits.
Lakewood 3, West Virginia 1 (August 11)
Miguel Nunez - 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 3 GB, 3 FB
Brian Pointer - 0 for 4, K
Willie Carmona - 1 for 3, R, RBI, BB
Art Charles - 2 for 4, R, 2 2B, 2 K
Mitch Walding - 0 for 3, BB
Larry Greene - 0 for 4, 2 K (outfield assist)
Carlos Tocci - 2 for 3, 2 RBI, picked off
Impressive win for Miguel Nunez, who picked up his 9th win on the season. This was definitely one of his best starts of the season. Carlos Tocci with a big two hit game which drove in the eventual winning run in the bottom of the 7th. Lakewood salvages the 3 games series by taking the finale.
Vermont 2, Williamsport 1 (August 9)
Mitch Gueller - 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K, 5 GB, 1 FB
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 4, 3 K
Andrew Pullin - 1 for 4, R, 3B
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 2, 2B, BB, K, HBP
Zach Green - 2 for 4, 2 K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, 2 K
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 4, K
Logan Pierce - 1 for 4, 2B
This is the kind of start you like to see from a guy like Gueller, who is a much better pitcher than he has been as of late. Otherwise, the offense couldn't really capitalize on their chances despite having more XBH than the other team. Andrew Knapp's bat seems to be making a comeback. Zach Green's bat remains on fire.
Vermont 4, Williamsport 1 (August 10)
Drew Anderson - 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 7 K, 2 GB, 1 FB
Gustavo Martinez - 0 for 2, BB, CS, picked off
Andrew Pullin - 0 for 4, 2 K
Zach Green - 1 for 3, BB, K
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 4, R, 2 K
Gabriel Lino - 1 for 4, K
Logan Pierce - 2 for 4, K
Drew Anderson has been spectacular this season and was undeserving of the loss in this game. The offense for Williamsport is extremely inconsistent. Nice to see Zach Green has really turned it up a notch. The walks are encouraging to see.
Williamsport 7, Vermont 2 (August 11)
Yacksel Rios - 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, BB, 4 GB, 4 FB
Jiandido Tromp - 1 for 5 (fielding error)
Andrew Pullin - 3 for 5, 2 R, HR, K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 5, R
Zach Green - 1 for 5, R, RBI, K
Dylan Cozens - 2 for 5, R, RBI, K
Gabriel Lino - 0 for 2, 2 K
Logan Pierce - 0 for 3, R, K, HBP
Rios with an great start and gets the win in the series finale. Pullin with a rare HR. Williamsport salvages an otherwise lackluster 3 game tilt with Vermont and have been struggling to get above that .500 mark. They remain 7 back in the division and 5 out of the wildcard lead.
GCL Phillies 6, GCL Blue Jays 4 (August 9, Game 1 of doubleheader)
Feliberto Sanchez - 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 5 GB, 5 FB
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 4, R, K
Jair Morelos - 2 for 4, R, 2B, RBI
JP Crawford - 2 for 4, R, RBI
Nick Ferdinand - 2 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, SB
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 2, R, BB, K
Jose Pujols - 0 for 3, 3 K
Sanchez with a great starter after a rough last outing, but unfortunately didn't earn the win after the bullpen nearly blew the game. Sanchez would leave the game in favor of Richard Bielski in a 3-0 game in the top of the 7th. He would then give up 4 runs to give The GCL Jays the lead. Nick Ferdinand would end the game in the bottom of the 7th with a walk-off 3 run homer.
GCL Phillies 4, GCL Blue Jays 3 (August 9, Game 2 of doubleheader makeup of 7/25 ppd)
Denton Keys - 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 4 GB, 0 FB
Cord Sandberg - 0 for 3, K
JP Crawford - 1 for 3, R (throwing error)
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 2, 2 R, HBP
Deivi Grullon - 1 for 3, RBI
Robinson Torres - 1 for 3 , RBI
Jan Hernandez - 1 for 2, HR, 2 RBI
Denton Keys with a spot start in a bullpen game for the GCL Phillies. He was very effective, but would get a no-decision. Despite a late scare, the GCL Phillies would hold on to win the game. JP Crawford goes 3 for 7 on the day.
GCL Blue Jays 10, GCL Phillies 4 (August 10)
Elneiry Garcia - 4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 6 K, 1 GB, 2 FB
Herlis Rodriguez - 2 for 5, K, SB
Cord Sandberg - 2 for 4, BB
JP Crawford - 1 for 3, R, 2 BB
Nick Ferdinand - 1 for 5, HR, 2 RBI, K
Wilmer Oberto - 1 for 5, R, 2 K
Deivi Grullon - 3 for 4
Jair Morelos - 2 for 4, RBI
Gacia was doing fine until the 5th inning when he and Will Morris would combine for 9 of the Blue Jays runs. Jesen Therrien looks like he was demoted from the rotation after numerous terrible outings. The offense had hits from all the big players. Rodriguez, Crawford, Ferdinand and Oberto should likely be promoted if it weren't for the logjam in the levels in front of them. This is a good problem to have for the Phillies.
