Phillies Minor League Roundup - August 29, 2013

Scranton/WB 9, Lehigh Valley 2

Adam Morgan - 1.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, K, 3 HR
Josh Fields - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R
Cesar Hernandez - 0 for 4, K
Freddy Galvis - 0 for 4
Steve Susdorf - 1 for 4, R, 2B
Josh Fields - 2 for 4, RBI, 2 K
Michael Martinez - 2 for 4, R, 2 K
Leandro Castro - 1 for 4, K

In a laugh-er of a game, Lehigh pitching gets annihilated and the offense goes flat.  Adam Morgan with a really disheartening start.  It's his last one of the year and one that will likely dwell until next season.  Former MLBer Mike MacDougal would give up the other 5 runs.  This would bring in Josh Fields as a pitcher for what I'm guessing is one of the first times in his professional career.  He recorded an out.  The only plus side is recent callup Mike Nesseth pitching 2 hitless/scoreless innings of relief.

Reading 9, Richmond 8

Perci Garner - 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 10 GB, 2 FB
Austin Wright - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, K
Zach Collier - 1 for 5, 3B, RBI, K
Maikel Franco - 2 for 5, 2 R, HR, 2 K (throwing error)
Jim Murphy - 4 for 5, 3 R, HR
Kelly Dugan - 1 for 1, RBI
Anthony Hewitt - 3 for 4, R, K, SB
Sebastian Valle - 2 for 4, RBI, 2 K

A crazy game.  A run was scored in each inning by at least one team except the 1st.  At one point Richmond held a 6-1 lead in the 4th inning.  It wasn't enough to stop the Fightin's offense. Franco with his 15th bomb with Reading (31st overall) and Jim Murphy with his 23rd (his single season best).  This has been Murphy's best season as a pro and will likely be the starting 1st baseman for Lehigh next season.  Franco is arm-baring his way to the top of many fans radar.  His K-rate seems a bit high as of late; at least higher than what he was doing previous to the past week or so.  Garner with a stinker of a start.  This is not helping him being protected.

Dunedin 8, Clearwater 0

Hoby Milner - 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 5 K, HR, 3 GB, 2 FB
Aaron Altherr - 0 for 3, BB, K
Chris Serritella - 1 for 4, K
Cameron Perkins - 2 for 4, 2B, 2 K
Brock Stassi - 0 for 4
Harold Martinez - 2 for 4, K

Milner with a disappointing start.  In his 2 starts prior he had given up 0 R in 13 IP.  The bullpen and offensive support were non-existent.  Clearwater has not been shutout for the 3rd game in a row.  This is a disappointing run to close out the season for a team that has largely been pretty good/consistent throughout the year.  Harold Martinez continues to boost his average, but has shown nothing in the form of actual power.  He doesn't walk, but also isn't a huge strikeout guy.

Hagerstown 14, Lakewood 1

Jon Prosinski - 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, K, HR, 9 GB, 3 FB
JP Crawford - 1 for 3, R, BB, K
Willie Carmona - 2 for 4, 2 2B, RBI (throwing error)
Larry Greene - 0 for 3, BB, 2 K (fielding error)
Carlos Tocci - 1 for 3

Prosinski wasn't awful, but was hit with the loss.  4 relievers following him would combine for 12 runs (6 earned) in 3 innings.  The offense also wasn't effective going 0 for 7 with RISP.  JP Crawford with another hit and now has a .275 AVG and .370 OBP in 40 AB in Lakewood.  DH Josh Ludy would even enter the game to pitch.  He goes 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, K.

Batavia 7, Williamsport 5 (Game 1 of doubleheader, continuation of 6/25 game)

Shane Martin - 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 6 GB, 3 FB
Dylan Cozens - 2 for 3, 3 R, 2 2B, BB (outfield assist, home)
Zach Green - 3 for 4, 2 R, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI (fielding error)
Andrew Pullin - 0 for 4, K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 4, K, CS
Logan Pierce - 1 for 4, K

This was a continuation of a 6/25 game between the clubs that began in the top of the 6th tied 3-3.  Zach Green gets his 13th homer in the continuation and ties the team record for homers in a season.  His total also leads the NY/Penn League this season.  However, Batavia would score a run in the 7th, 2 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to take the lead and win the game.  Jonathan Musser takes the loss after giving up 3 ER in 2 IP.

Williamsport 6, Batavia 5 (Game 2 of doubleheader)

Julio Reyes - 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 GB, 5 FB
Justin Parr - 1 for 2, R, 2B, 2 BB, K, CS
Malquin Canelo - 1 for 3, R, RBI, K, SB
Dylan Cozens - 0 for 2, R, BB
Zach Green - 1 for 3, R, RBI, 2 K
Andrew Knapp - 1 for 3, 2B, RBI
Logan Pierce - 1 for 3, 2B
Herlis Rodriguez - 0 for 3
Samuel Hiciano - 0 for 2, BB, K

Williamsport takes the finale of the doubleheader.  They led the game 6-1 after the bottom of the 4th.  Batavia would put up 2-spots in the 5th and 7th, but the Crosscutters would hold on to win.  Julio Reyes with a good, but deceiving start.  His GB/FB was a bit off, he threw a wild pitch, committed a balk and hit a batter in the game as well.  Williamsport has 6 games remaining on the season.

GCL Pirates 1, GCL Phillies 0

Tyler Viza - 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K, 3 GB, 1 FB
Venn Biter - 0 for 4, K
Robinson Torres - 0 for 4
Wilmer Oberto - 0 for 3, HBP
Jose Pujols - 0 for 2, BB, K
Cord Sandberg - 1 for 1
Jan Hernandez - 0 for 4, 3 K
Trey Williams - 1 for 4, K

Last game of the season for the GCL Phils.  They wind up an even 30-30 and miss the playoffs by 3 games (to the GCL Pirates).  Viza pitches excellent once again.  In August (as a starter), he pitched 24 innings and had given up only 14 hits, 3 R (all earned), 8 walks and struck out 15 batters.  He will likely start next season in Williamsport, but could be bumped up to Lakewood.  Pujols with a pretty woeful GCL debut. The power is obviously there, but the bat on ball skills aren't yet.  He is striking out more than a 1/3 of the time as well.  All these guys will graduate to Williamsport next season.  Wilmer Oberto will likely get the bump to Lakewood because of his outstanding season.  There he will probably split time between 1B/DH with Logan Pierce.
